Best Ways to Deal with Car Windshield Scratches

Screenshot-1

While windshield scratches may not seem as major as a chip or a crack, they can still create a weak point in your windshield, making it more susceptible to future damage. Small scratches can result in deeper cracks, especially in extreme temperatures.

Additionally, these scratches can impact your driving visibility, especially under direct sunlight or at night when facing oncoming headlights.

What Causes Windshield Scratches?

There are several factors that can cause windshield scratches. Understanding common causes of windshield scratches is essential to avoid them in the future. Here are some of the most common reasons why your windshield gets scratched:

  1. Dirt and Debris: One of the most common causes of windshield scratches is dirt and debris. When your vehicle is exposed to various forms of dirt and debris, such as small stone, sand, and dust particles, these materials can strike the glass of your vehicle, especially when driving at high speeds.
  2. Poor Cleaning Practices: Yes, cleaning your windshield regularly is a good habit. However, it’s important to clean your windshields properly. Otherwise, you’ll end up dealing with more scratches. Using dry, rough cloths or paper towels to clean your windshield can inadvertently scratch the glass surface. Similarly, cleaning with dirty sponges or cloths that have picked up hard particles can cause scratches. To avoid this, always use a clean, soft microfiber cloth and a proper glass cleaner. Also, make sure to wipe your windshield while it’s wet to prevent scratches.
  3. Worn-Out Wiper Blades: Over time, the rubber edge of your wiper blades can degrade, exposing the metal or hard plastic underneath, which can then scratch the glass when the wipers are in use. Make sure to regularly inspect your windshield wipers and replace them to avoid damaging your windshield.
  4. Low-Quality Glass: If your windshield is made from lower-quality glass, it is more prone to scratching. Premium quality auto glass is durable and is designed to be more resistant to scratches. This is more common in aftermarket replacements that do not meet the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) standards. Always opt for high-quality or OEM glass for windshield replacements.
  5. Harsh Environmental Conditions: Exposure to harsh environmental conditions, such as sandstorms, hail, or even branches and debris during strong winds, can cause scratches to the windshield. Parking under cover during extreme weather conditions and avoid driving in hazardous conditions when possible can help protect your windshield.

The Importance of Dealing with Windshield Scratches Immediately

Your vehicle’s windshield accounts for 30% of your vehicle’s structural integrity. In fact, during a front-end collision, your windshield contributes to as much as 45% of the vehicle’s cabin strength, and in scenarios involving a rollover, this figure can increase to 60%.

Ignoring damage on your windshield, including seemingly insignificant scratches, can actually influence how well your vehicle can withstand and absorb the impact of future collisions.

Even minor imperfections can weaken the windshield’s ability to withstand additional stress, potentially compromising its structural support during critical moments and reducing its capacity to protect passengers from external impacts.

How To Get Scratches Out Of Windshield

There are several ways you can remove scratches from your windshield. Although it’s preferred that you consult auto glass experts, if you don’t have the time to seek professional help immediately, there are some DIY methods that can serve as a temporary solution. Here are some ways you can perform a DIY auto glass scratch repair.

Clean Your Windshield

Before trying any of these DIY auto glass scratch solutions, make sure to clean your windshield. Attempting to repair your windshield without cleaning it can result in trapping dirt and debris under the repair material, leading to further abrasions or a less clear finish.

To properly clean a windshield, start by selecting a high-quality, automotive-specific glass cleaner and a clean microfiber towel to avoid scratches. Begin by generously spraying the glass cleaner onto the windshield, covering all areas.

Use the microfiber towel to wipe the cleaner in a circular motion, starting from the top corner and working your way down to ensure you cover the entire surface. For stubborn spots, apply a bit more pressure or reapply the cleaner as needed. Finish by wiping the windshield with a dry side of the towel for a streak-free shine.

A clean surface ensures that the repair materials adhere properly and work effectively, giving you the best possible outcome for a smoother, more transparent windshield.

Clear Nail Polish

Clear nail polish is an excellent temporary solution to remove scratches from your windshield, specifically the shallow ones.

After cleaning your windshield, apply a thin coat of nail polish directly on the scratch. Wait for it to dry completely; the polish will form a clear seal over the scratch. This method works for small, superficial scratches where the goal is to seal and protect the area from further damage.

Whitening Toothpaste

Whitening toothpaste contains small, abrasive particles that can polish minor scratches out of glass, much like they do with teeth stains. Once you’ve thoroughly cleaned your windshield, apply a small amount of whitening toothpaste onto a damp, soft cloth and gently rub it over the scratch in a circular motion.

After working the toothpaste into the scratch for a minute, rinse with water and dry. Repeat if necessary. This method is suitable for very light surface scratches.

Glass Polish

Another great solution for shallow scratches that don’t go deep into the glass is glass polishes. Simply dab a bit of polish over the scratch and buff it out with a microfiber cloth, using circular motions until the scratch is no longer visible.

Baking Soda and Water Paste

Baking soda, known for its gentle abrasive qualities, works wonders on minor glass scratches. Clean the glass first, then create a mixture using two parts baking soda and one part water to achieve a thick paste. With a soft cloth, apply this blend over the scratched area.

Using circular movements and a bit of elbow grease, work the paste into the glass for a few minutes. Afterward, wash it off with water and dry the surface. You might need to do this more than once for the best results. It’s an excellent solution for superficial scratches.

Glass Repair Kit

Glass repair kits are a great temporary fix for light windshield scratches, and they are readily available at auto part retailers. These sets usually come with a resin formula designed to mend scratches and cracks, plus the necessary tools for a seamless application.

To get the best results, it’s imperative to follow the instructions that accompany your selected kit closely. The standard method entails purifying the area, applying the resin to the blemish, and ensuring it’s evenly distributed.

The process usually includes a crucial curing stage, which might need UV light to complete. These kits are particularly effective for repairing deeper scratches, delivering a result that resembles professional repair work.
