How to Handle a Chipped or Cracked Windshield?. It’s inevitable to encounter small debris hitting your windshield, especially when driving at high speeds.

Screenshot-1

It’s inevitable to encounter small debris hitting your windshield, especially when driving at high speeds. Although, in most cases, it doesn’t inflict significant damage to your vehicle, there is still a chance that that small flying debris can result in serious damage in the long run when ignored.

Even the smallest crack can compromise the structural integrity of your windshield. Additionally, these windshield cracks tend to spread quickly, especially with the temperature fluctuations on the road, which can potentially result in obstructing the driver’s view.

Whether you have a new car or a used vehicle, taking care of a cracked windshield as soon as possible is the key to keeping your vehicle safe, adhering to traffic regulations, and avoiding higher expenses down the line. Ignoring the issue and neglecting to bring your vehicle to a windshield chip repair shop can lead to a more severe crack, necessitating a costly windshield replacement instead of a simple repair. Here’s some helpful advice on how to handle a chipped or cracked windshield:

Stop the Windshield Crack from Spreading

If you can’t bring your vehicle to an auto glass shop right away, it’s vital to perform temporary measures to prevent the crack from spreading further.

Use a Windshield Repair Kit

Windshield repair kits are usually the best solution to temporarily fixing minor windshield cracks. It’s important to note that the quality of most of these windshield repair kits is subpar at best. Windshield repair kits can easily be found online or at automotive supply stores and hardware stores at affordable prices.

But, if you cannot get your hands on a windshield repair kit, here are other methods you can use to temporarily repair your windshield.

Use Clear Nail Polish

Something as readily available as nail polish can actually help stop a windshield crack or chip from getting bigger. To use clear nail polish, you must first clean the damaged area with mild soap and water. Make sure to be as gentle as possible to prevent the crack from spreading further.

After cleaning the area, use nail polish to fill the chip and the area around it. The nail polish will act as a temporary sealant, providing a clear cover that minimizes the appearance of the chip and prevents moisture and dirt from entering and worsening the damage until you can get a professional repair. Make sure to use clear nail polish, though, as you don’t want it to obstruct your view.

Seal the Crack with Super Glue

Similar to the nail polish method, you’ll have to clean the damaged area first to prevent dirt, debris, or dust particles from getting sealed inside the crack.

Once you’ve cleaned your windshield, use the super glue’s dropper to carefully squeeze the glue into the crack. Move the tip of the dropper or use cotton swabs to evenly spread the superglue throughout the crack. Wipe away the excess glue and wait for it to dry for a couple of hours.

Tape the Crack

After thoroughly cleaning the damaged area, prepare a high-quality, clear packing tape or a specialized auto glass repair tape for better durability and visibility. Measure the tape and make sure it covers the entire length of the crack with some allowance on each end for a more secure fit. Gently lay the tape on the crack, ensuring you smooth it out progressively from end to end to keep air bubbles from forming, which could impair your sight.

While this approach doesn’t repair the crack, it serves as a temporary barrier against moisture and debris, maintaining the condition until you’re able to seek expert repair services.

Understand Your Insurance Policy’s Coverage

To reduce your out-of-pocket expenses for your auto glass repair or windshield replacement, it’s important to fully understand your insurance coverage. Thoroughly review your policy documents and pay attention to sections about glass repair or replacement.

In most cases, car insurance policies usually include some type of coverage for auto glass repair or windshield replacement. If you are confused by your policy terms and conditions, it’s best to call your insurance agent or support for clarity. They’ll walk you through claim processes, coverages for OEM or aftermarket glass, and if you must stick to their network for repairs.

Being readily equipped with all the necessary information ensures you can make informed decisions, potentially saving money and ensuring the repair or replacement process is smooth and efficient.

Contact an Auto Glass Repair & Replacement Shop

Choosing a top-notch windshield service isn’t rocket science but requires a bit of homework. Start with seeking out services that boast glowing customer testimonials and a robust reputation. A warranty on repairs is a must—it’s their promise of quality to you.

Make sure they use premium materials, preferably OEM glass, to match your car’s original standards. Also, understanding the skill level and certifications of their technicians can be reassuring. Going with a proven professional ensures your auto glass repair or windshield replacement is in the best hands.
