Home » Jean Todt on 2008 F1 title: “Singapore GP was fixed and should have been canceled”

Jean Todt on 2008 F1 title: “Singapore GP was fixed and should have been canceled”. Former Ferrari team principal Jean Tod commented on the 2008 F1 title.

Jean Todt, former president of the FIA and Team Principal of Ferrari during the Michael Schumacher era, commented on the 2008 World Championship, stating that “the Singapore GP was fixed.”

In 2008, McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Felipe Massa battled for the World Championship until the final corner, and the Englishman emerged victorious, securing his first career championship.

The then McLaren driver scored 98 points in that Formula One season, compared to the 97 of the former Ferrari driver, who missed the opportunity to become Brazil’s first world champion since Ayrton Senna.

Crashgate Scandal
During that season, however, Formula 1 was a topic of discussion both on and off the track, mainly due to the “Crashgate” scandal at the Singapore Grand Prix. The outcome of that race, later explicitly defined as “fixed,” influenced the outcome of the Drivers’ Championship negatively for Felipe Massa and positively for Lewis Hamilton.

Jean Todt’s words
Jean Todt, who had left Ferrari just 15 years ago, made statements regarding the matter: “Perhaps we could have been tougher when we learned about this story. There is no doubt that the Singapore GP was fixed and should have been canceled,” he added.

Felipe Massa’s legal (and psychological) battle
The Frenchman chose not to comment on the legal battle initiated by the former Brazilian Ferrari driver against the FIA to overturn the result of the 2008 World Championship, stating: “I don’t want to get involved in the controversy.”

However, he revealed how this affair had affected Felipe Massa psychologically: “Psychologically, it was very tough for him.”
