Toto Wolff and Christian Horner, team principals of competing Formula 1 teams, have shared their perspectives on the recent news surrounding Charles Leclerc’s purported extensive contract extension with Scuderia Ferrari. As indicated earlier this week by the reputable Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Monegasque driver has committed to a lucrative five-year agreement, securing his position with the Italian side until the culmination of the 2029 Formula One championship.
Despite continuous speculation linking Charles Leclerc to rival teams during the last year, particularly Mercedes, he has consistently expressed his aspiration to clinch a world championship with Ferrari, the team that has been an integral part of his motorsport life for more than a decade. Inquired about the anticipated contract during the Ferrari premiere in Leicester Square on Monday night, Toto Wolff shared his thoughts with Sky Sports News: “I don’t know anything about the contract but he is a great guy. Why wouldn’t Ferrari sign him?” – the Mercedes team principal explained.
Christian Horner, the team principal of Red Bull, emphasized that Scuderia Ferrari would be making an unwise decision if they chose not to retain Charles Leclerc, especially considering that his current contract concludes at the end of 2024: “It’s totally natural. He’s a great driver. I’m sure they’ll want to keep hold of him and they’d be crazy if they didn’t.” – the British former racing driver and current Team Principal of Red Bull pointed out.
A few months ago, Toto Wolff acknowledged that the Monegasque is a part of Mercedes’ long-term plans but dismissed the possibility of an immediate transfer for the Ferrari driver: “Charles is a super guy and, for the long-term future, someone you need to always have on your radar. And that’s clear. But not for the short and the medium term” – Toto Wolff said during the Baku Grand Prix weekend.

Speculations about a potential seat exchange between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were dismissed by both drivers. The rumors were put to rest when the seven-time world champion inked a new two-year deal with his current team three months ago.
