F1 | Michael Schumacher, his daughter’s wedding and that morbid curiosity about his condition. Michael Schumacher's condition should remain a private matter, yet there is still an unhealthy curiosity.

Michael Schumacher, 2003 San Marino GP

Michael Schumacher at his daughter Gina’s wedding: this is the rumor circulating online since yesterday. More than 10 years after the now sadly infamous skiing accident, the seven-time Formula One world champion has not appeared in public.

Thanks to his wife Corinna, who has literally built a protective barrier to preserve his privacy. For a decade, people have wondered about his condition, and in return, we receive fragmented accounts from doctors and the very few people who have access to the world built by Schumi’s wife.

And that’s how it should be. The Kaiser’s family has asked for privacy, and that should be respected. Unfortunately, some have tried to cross that line. The latest case involves a father and son who attempted to extort money from the family, threatening to release private images of the former Ferrari driver.

Then, the 27-year-old daughter of the German champion got married, and local media reported that her father Schumacher was also at the ceremony. It would have been his first public appearance in eleven years since the accident. However, the family allegedly adopted security measures, such as banning cell phones, so that no one could photograph Michael. The news originated in Germany and quickly spread to foreign media, including Italy.

But how much of it is true? There are neither confirmations nor denials, so it’s really hard to determine what is real. Considering the way Corinna has always kept privacy at such a high level, it seems quite strange that she would “soften,” deciding to show her husband in public, even if it was for such an important event.

The issue doesn’t lie in the news itself, but in the morbid curiosity of wanting to know, digging online, inventing stories, and being inappropriate when it comes to someone’s health. The media call it “dark tourism,” the unhealthy phenomenon of visiting places where murders have taken place, or where there has been death or bloodshed.

With Michael Schumacher, the same thing happens (and we don’t realize it). The desire to know, the obsession with someone in such delicate circumstances, drives us to pounce like vultures on prey. We are hungry for information, especially when it concerns such an important and legendary figure as Michael Schumacher.

When we talk about the “mystery” of his condition, let’s remember we are talking about privacy. Whether it’s a famous person or not, it should be respected. Privacy is an inviolable right of every human being, and even more so for someone who has experienced such a tragedy and suffered such an injustice.

It’s not just about this, but also the dignity of the individual. We must learn not to cross boundaries, to be discreet, and to ask ourselves: if we were in that condition, would we want to be left in peace, or turn our lives into a spectacle for the media to feed on?
