What a weekend for Carlos Sainz
From the operating room to the highest step of the podium in just over 15 days: Carlos Sainz has won his third career Formula 1 race in Australia at the Melbourne circuit – all as a Ferrari driver – achieving a real feat especially because his participation in the Australian Grand Prix was not even to be taken for granted on the eve of the Melbourne weekend.
The Spanish driver has now brought his victory tally to 3 wins out of 3 against Charles Leclerc since the two have been sharing the Ferrari garage. After Charles Leclerc’s 3-0 in the first half of 2022, Carlos Sainz has responded with an equal number of victories, evenly spread from 2022 through 2024, passing through 2023. In 2025, the Spaniard will not be a Ferrari driver because Lewis Hamilton will come to Maranello, but the Melbourne weekend will certainly have further increased Carlos Sainz’s stock since in the last 21 races either Max Verstappen has won or he has.
In a press conference at the end of the race which was held at the Albert Park circuit, Carlos Sainz emphasized not feeling underestimated, at least not by those who have the knowledge to judge his worth: “I don’t feel underestimated by people who know this sport – the words of the Ferrari driver – if other people who do not have a clear idea of this sport want to underestimate me, that’s fine. I care about people who know this sport well, who have seen my data, who have seen how I work and who have seen my speed, and this is what matters to me. I do not feel underestimated by them.” – the Ferrari driver pointed out.
Earlier, also in a press conference, Carlos Sainz reiterated that he does not race to showcase himself, but for himself: “I am still without a seat for next year. So I believe this result will help. I believe everyone more or less knows what I am capable of. I race for myself. I race to prove to myself that I can win whenever I have a competitive car and whenever there is an opportunity to win in a weekend. I do not race to prove my worth to team leaders or people. I race to prove to myself that if I am given a car, I can make it and I can be up there, and this is the mentality and approach I have and will continue to have for the rest of the year.” – Carlos Sainz concluded.
