Ferrari declines Adrian Newey’s terms: legendary F1 designer to join Aston Martin. Adrian Newey has made his choice: he will not be joining Ferrari.

Adrian Newey has made his choice: he will not be joining Scuderia Ferrari, opting instead to go to Aston Martin under Lawrence Stroll’s leadership. This news is set to be officially announced in September. Hence, in the words of “The Betrothed”, “this marriage is not to take place, neither tomorrow, nor at any other time”.

Autosprint and Italian daily newspaper Corriere dello Sport, through an article by journalist Fulvio Solms, broke the exclusive news. The details include a €100 million deal, complete control over every phase of the Aston Martin Formula 1 project, and a structure that impressed the former Red Bull designer. Added to this is an exclusive relationship with Honda for the power unit, particularly relevant for the regulatory changes that will be introduced starting with the 2026 Formula 1 championship, and the ability to continue working at his own pace, not far from home, if one can say so.

There remains uncertainty about the drivers. Aside from Lawrence Stroll’s son (for obvious reasons), it is unclear if the paths of Adrian Newey and Fernando Alonso will cross. It is more plausible that Lawrence Stroll will attempt to bring Max Verstappen to Aston Martin, at least for the 2026 campaign. This move would recreate the partnership that saw Max Verstappen become (as of now) a three-time Formula 1 world champion. It is worth noting that Adrian Newey and Max Verstappen have known each other for many years, since the three-time world champion began his career at Red Bull. But the real question is another.

Why did Adrian Newey, who had a pre-contract (a document just as binding) with the Italian team, a fact confirmed by several sources in the last few weeks, eventually said “no thanks” to Ferrari and instead choose to join the team of Lawrence Stroll? In reality, things are a bit more complicated. According to some paddock whispers, it wasn’t so much Adrian Newey making a grand refusal as Ferrari deciding not to continue their persistent pursuit of the most successful designer in Formula 1 history.

The Maranello team had previously attempted to recruit Adrian Newey for the first time in the early 1980s, then about a decade later with Jean Todt, half-heartedly in 2014 with Stefano Domenicali, and now once again. This time, even Piero Ferrari, the founder’s son, executive vice president, and a person with a great deal of knowledge about Formula 1, got involved. Curiously, Ferrari has made these approaches to Adrian Newey every ten years. However, it seems that the legendary car designer presented a long and significant list of very detailed requests, including numerous decision-making prerogatives.

If the Maranello top management had accepted these terms, they would have bypassed not only the team principal but also, to some extent, the chief executive officer Benedetto Vigna. In the end, this convinced Frederic Vasseur, most likely with the approval of John Elkann, to withdraw from what had probably already become a bidding war between Ferrari and Aston Martin, after other potential contenders like McLaren and Mercedes had quickly dropped out for various reasons. Thus, for the fourth time, the British engineer turned down Maranello’s offer. Or rather, the two parties could not reach an agreement.

If the reports from Italian daily newspaper Corriere dello Sport and Autosprint are accurate, it is hard to entirely put the blame on Ferrari. A brand like Maranello could hardly tolerate such a broad delegation of powers to Adrian Newey. That said, a lot of fans and paddock insiders believe that a mind as brilliant and creative as Adrian Newey’s might have been worth any request. Also, it is worth reflecting on the fact that Ferrari’s “final” organizational structure, including who will replace Italian aerodynamicist Enrico Cardile, the former Ferrari technical director and Head of Aerodynamics Department, is still unknown.

The motto for John Elkann, Benedetto Vigna and Frederic Vasseur seems to be “the team matters the most.” Let’s hope that the Maranello top management is indeed right, though given the recent years, there are serious doubts about whether this will be enough to mount a challenge for the Formula 1 world title in the upcoming seasons. These questions cast a troubling shadow over Ferrari’s future years in Formula 1. John Elkann had promised that Ferrari would win the championship before reaching the historical drought of 21 years, as the previous one dates back from 1979 to 2000, when Michael Schumacher and Jean Todt brought the title in Maranello, starting a beautiful period of dominance for the Italian side. Ferrari fans are understandably anxious as that milestone approaches.

Therefore, the great and definitive “no” has arrived, likely marking Adrian Newey’s last professional experience before a golden and well-deserved retirement from the world of motorsport. Unless there is a last-minute plot twist, which seems highly improbable if not impossible at this stage, the decision is final. But as we know, reality often surpasses imagination.

Let them (Ferrari) sink to the bottom. If this is true we definitely sometimes write our own destiny.

    As a Ferrari fan:

Well….good luck Elkann, Vigna for the future, You lads have just shot yourself in the foot. Where are we now, Ferrari 4th force on the grid, well make that 5th. Luca Cordero di Montezemolo built this: Todt, Brawn, Byrne and Schumacher, seek the best to create a winning culture.

These clowns Elkann and Vigna have no idea how to build a winning formula. Byrne is there as consultant until 2027 (if I’m not mistaken) Vasseur wants get Mike Elliot, remember him from Mercedes zero pod days, which had major problems. Well I guess if you have all the money in world, why not continue building a clown show??? FERRARI days are over under leadership of ELKANN & VIGNA (unless proven wrong ) Lewis Hamilton won’t win 8th title with FERRARI, is Leclerc going to sit on the side and watch this happen, I guess not his been there since 2019 achasing each and every only to get the same excuse from top management, next year, next year and the you have the McLaren boys, who has the best car this season, also with an eye on the big prize.

If Newey wanted the power to hire and fire people and basically decimate the ranks and replace them with all new hires, and if those new additions are all English engineers, leaving Italian workers out in the cold, then I can’t blame Ferrari. It depends on how far Newey would go and how much power Newey wanted
The way to do it is like how Jean Todt and Ross Brawn did it. They worked with the people Ferrari already had, trained them better, and slowly added new additions who fit in with the current team. They slowly evolved the team refining it, improving it, until they won.
The time lines with Newey seem different. Todt and Brawn were younger. Newey is a lot older. How long would he commit and what would be left if he departed.? A team or a house of cards waiting to collapse after he was gone?
Time to move on and find someone else.

I’m sorry to say this, but have 99% lost their minds? Think about it – someone, as good as he may be (and here it should be mentioned that Newey can NOT work miracles – when he came to Red Bull the team was also in the middle of nowhere for three years – it is a process to get to the top, so it is by no means the case that Newey comes and you win immediately, that is dreaming!) works when and from where he wants a few hours a week without being on site and he gets to decide which staff to hire, who does what and what technical partners you have and what sporting activities you do and how the budget is spent and earns 300 to 400 times as much as the other engineers and 120 times as much as the senior engineers and gets a team of 20 engineers that he brings with him for which 30 others have to be laid off! Don’t you realize how absurd that is? Not only would there no longer be a team (which is actually the most important thing in F1) because everyone would be completely dissatisfied and would look for something else, such a thing would be doomed to failure from the start because everyone would be working against such an “engineer god with omnipotence! Furthermore, you can’t give an external consultant practically complete decision-making power in terms of technology and personnel, especially if he is not even on site and only works part-time or even less! That would be completely insane! As a consultant who only works part-time and externally, you can never seriously demand such things because you know exactly how absurd it is and that no one in their right mind would ever do such a thing. Unless you WANT the negotiations to fail! So Newey never really wanted to join Ferrari, that’s why he made completely absurd demands that nobody would ever fulfill! Rejecting these demands was the only reasonable thing Ferrari could do. Anything else would have completely destroyed the Ferrari F1 team. There would no longer have been a Ferrari F1 team because every engineer with even the slightest bit of self-esteem and talent would have left and the “Newey” project would have failed because only the dregs would have remained and worked against the ever-present “superman with omnipotence” who earned a hundred times as much but only worked one hundredth as much. Just think about it. These demands are completely absurd for a part-time consultant who only works a few hours a week. And we’re not even talking about earnings that are three or four hundred (!!!) times as high!!! Something like that could be considered if someone started as technical director, like Ross Brawn (who actually had similar powers, but even they weren’t that far-reaching!), working 50 hours a month and not 10 or 15 and being on site! But not with an external consultant who is not on site and works when, where and how he likes.

Newey nearly has the same number of championships as that of ferrari . I will let that sink in for a bit, so u can comprehend what i just stated. A designer with an amazing resume. Think about that before you respond.

Then ask yourself what has ferrari achieved. Let me remind you f..k all.

Need i say anymore. Newey needs to be the foundation on which to start a ferrari revival , along with talented group of others to support him and his mission to
restore Ferrari’s image and reputation and can finally end this hell fans having been witnessing. He is a undisputed, Superstar

What ferrari need to do is f..k off losers like Elkann and his off sider Mr Japanese proverbs Parasit Vigna.

      Cardile was useless.
He is responsible for the lack of performance in chassis & aero since 2019.
Cardile had to go one way or another.

Newey announced that he was leaving Red Bull right after Aston Martin announced that they were dropping Mercedes Power Untit for Honda. Adrian Newey used Ferrari for leverage to get what he wanted from Stroll and Honda.
He never intended to sign with Ferrari Newey knowing that Aston Martin being a stones through from his home was the best and only choice for him. Newey and Honda are like 2 peas in a pod. I’m thinking that Honda had a lot to do with Newey leaving Red Bull it probably involved money too
