Will Spain remember Carlos Sainz or remain in the shadow of past F1 champions?. Carlos Sainz Sr. recently discussed the relationship between his son and Fernando Alonso.

Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin AMR24), Carlos Sainz (Ferrari SF-24)

Fernando Alonso, the first Spanish driver to win two Formula 1 World Championships, is a figure who has left an indelible mark on motorsport. In a recent interview, Carlos Sainz Sr. offered a reflection on Alonso’s legacy and how it has influenced the perception of his son, Carlos Sainz Jr., within F1.

According to the multiple-time Dakar champion, Fernando Alonso’s success laid the foundation for a new generation of Spanish drivers, but it also created an inevitable comparison for anyone who came after him.

“Fernando Alonso is an exceptional case. Being the first Spanish driver to win not one, but two world championships is something extraordinary. What he has done is so powerful that anyone who comes after him inevitably lives in his shadow.”

Fernando Alonso’s legacy in Carlos Sainz’s future
Sainz Sr. recognizes that Alonso’s impact goes beyond his victories. We are talking about a unique figure, immensely talented and with a special personality, capable of capturing attention and leaving an indelible mark in Formula 1 history. But Carlos Sainz Sr. believes that, as far as his son is concerned, the best is yet to come.

“Carlos continues to improve year after year. There are drivers who reach their peak very quickly, but he keeps growing steadily. I believe his best version is yet to come.” Sainz Sr. emphasizes that Carlos Jr. is a driver who knows how to adapt and progress. Even though he came after Fernando Alonso, he has shown that he has the potential to make an impact.

Speaking about the comparison between Alonso and Sainz Jr., Carlos Sainz Sr. pointed out how it’s normal for Alonso’s achievements to create high expectations. “What Fernando has done is incredible and will always be a benchmark. However, Carlos is forging his own path. He has driven for Ferrari, won races, and demonstrated qualities that many still haven’t fully appreciated.”

Fernando Alonso‘s figure is undoubtedly an icon of Formula 1, but number 55 is proving to be more than just a successor.
