Watch: Carlos Reutemann on podium for Ferrari in front of home crowd | 1977 Argentinian GP. Ferrari fielded Niki Lauda and local hero Carlos Reutemann.

On 9th January 1977, the Argentinian Grand Prix, the first round of that year’s Formula 1 World Championship took place at Buenos Aires. The Scuderia fielded Niki Lauda and local hero Carlos Reutemann, in his second race for the Prancing Horse after making his debut at Monza the previous year. Both men were in the 312 T2, which has contested the 1976 season, updated particularly on the aerodynamic front. Making its first appearance on the Maranello cars was the Fiat logo.

In qualifying, Lauda was fourth fastest, but over a second down on reigning champion Hunt in the Mclaren, while Reutemann qualified seventh. In the race, the Austrian had to retire on lap 20 with an engine problem, but in the closing states the Argentinian managed to secure a podium finish in third place. The race was won by Jody Scheckter in the Wolf car that was making its debut that day.
