On 3rd July 1982, the Dutch Grand Prix was held at Zandvoort. In qualifying, the Renault’s locked down the front row, with Rene Arnoux and Alain Prost. As for Scuderia Ferrari, it was back to running two cars after the tragic death of Gilles Villeneuve, deciding to put Patrick Tambay in the number 27 car. Didier Pironi qualified fourth in the other 126 C2 with Tambay sixth.
In the race, Didier Pironi attacked right from the start, managing to get ahead of Piquet and Prost immediately and, after a few laps, pulled off an amazing overtaking move on Arnoux to go first. The French Ferrari driver continued to pull away while further back, Piquet was staging a spectacular climb up the order, having had a difficult first few laps.
Didier Pironi took his third and final Formula 1 win that day and he moved to just one point behind McLaren’s John Watson, the leader of the classification, getting ahead of him in the following race.
