Home » “Charles Leclerc’s Spain DNF reminded me of my retirement in Brazil 2003” – Rubens Barrichello

“Charles Leclerc’s Spain DNF reminded me of my retirement in Brazil 2003” – Rubens Barrichello. Rubens on Ferrari's race in Spain and much more.

In an interview for Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Rubens Barrichello, a former Ferrari driver between 2000 and 2005, focused on the Spanish Grand Prix which took place last weekend at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, made a funny consideration on modern Formula 1 and looked back on his first win with the Maranello team.

Interviewed by the Italian media on his fiftieth birthday, Rubens Barrichello analyzed the disappointing weekend for Scuderia Ferrari at the Circuit de Catalunya by saying: “I was so sorry for Ferrari, it reminded me of my retirement in Brazil in 2003 when I was in command and I was out of fuel. Charles Leclerc lost a race he had already won.” However, the former Ferrari driver added: “Let’s look at the positive aspects: Ferrari is able to fight for the wins again, it can rely on a strong car. They will fight for the title”.

At the same time, as mentioned, the Brazilian also spoke of modern Formula 1, with a funny remark: “Formula 1 today is very different from when I was racing. If Drive to Survive existed back in my day, I would have become a Hollywood actor” – he jocked.

Rubens Barrichello also looked back on his first Formula 1 victory, which was scored in the 2000 German Grand Prix for Ferrari:
“The first victory at Hockenheim, Ross Brawn told me that I was crazy to stay on track, while everyone else was changing to wet tires, and I replied:” No, they are crazy.” But I remember with pleasure above all Silverstone 2003, I never had such a perfect Ferrari, that day I would have been able to start again last and I would have won anyway.”

On his relationship with Italy and Ferrari fans
“That every time I come, it seems that he I am still racing for Ferrari. Even if I stop for fuel. There is an affection that not even in Brazil…”.
