Gerhard Berger feels Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto has too much weight on his shoulders. Binotto needs help to run Ferrari – Berger.

Scuderia Ferrari clearly needs to make some changes and rethink its basic upper management structure in order to improve and be able to challenge Red Bull and Mercedes for Formula 1 championships in the following years.

This season, the Italian side impressed in the early stages of the campaign thanks to the highly competitive F1-75 car, which allowed Charles Leclerc to win two of the first three races, in Bahrain and Australia. Yet Ferrari’s title challenge collapsed soon after due to several engine reliability issues, slow pitstops or key strategic errors made by the Maranello team’s pit wall.

Gerhard Berger, who drove for Scuderia Ferrari in two different periods during the 80s and again in the 90s, believes team principal Mattia Binotto has too much weight on his shoulders and needs some help to manage the team:

“You need several shoulders on which the load is distributed,” Gerhard Berger said, as reported by the APA news agency, “like Red Bull with Helmut Marko, Christian Horner and Adrian Newey. It’s the same with Mercedes,” the 63-year-old, who is now boss of the DTM series, added. “It’s an excellent team that I’m sure will be back in the fight for the championship next year. But with Ferrari, they stand in their own way,” – the former Ferrari driver continued.

Yet the Austrian former Formula One racing driver does not agree with those asking for Mattia Binotto to be changed from his role:

“Mattia Binotto is doing an excellent job. He made the car, which wasn’t competitive very long ago, and the team into a super-fast, competitive team. He’s a good leader, but he’ll have to give up some areas of responsibility to good people.” – Gerhard Berger pointed out.
