Home » Jean Alesi emphasizes “Ferrari didn’t make a good impression with team radio message to Charles Leclerc”

Jean Alesi emphasizes “Ferrari didn’t make a good impression with team radio message to Charles Leclerc”. Jean Alesi looks back at Ferrari's race in Canada.

After several weekends that fell far below expectations, Scuderia Ferrari showed some signs of recovery in the last round of the 2023 Formula One season, the Canadian Grand Prix, which was held at the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal. A fourth and fifth place for Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz don’t represent an exceptional result, certainly. But the positive aspect is that, contrary to what was thought after the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, certain developments made to the SF-23 single-seater seem to be working. They seem to be, yes. Because the conditional is necessary considering that the Montreal circuit is less indicative in this regard compared to the upcoming ones on the calendar, starting with the Red Bull Ring, which next weekend will host the Austrian Grand Prix.

Moral of the story: we will have to wait a few more weeks before celebrating victory in Maranello. Former Ferrari man Jean Alesi shares this opinion and provided an assessment of the situation at the Scuderia in his regular analysis for the Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera. We can tell you that the former French driver was keen to criticize the Ferrari pit wall for a specific incident that occurred during the race. Here are some of his most important comments.

Jean Alesi’s analysis of the situation at Ferrari following the Canadian Grand Prix

“Seeing a Ferrari that performs well is reassuring. It means that the aerodynamic package brought to Canada can provide a step forward. Well, even though we are talking about a 4th and 5th place, behind three other teams, it’s not enough to be content and satisfied,” Jean Alesi begins in his analysis for the renowned Italian newspaper.

The Frenchman then adds: “In any case, the weekend in Montreal was complicated by rain, which makes any in-depth analysis difficult, and the track, without high-speed corners, does not serve as a true test for tire behavior, unlike the Austrian one and especially Silverstone, the venues for the upcoming races.”

As has often been the case in the past two years, Charles Leclerc experienced moments of tension with the Ferrari pit wall during qualifying in Canada. “It’s not a happy year for Charles Leclerc, coming from a misunderstood qualifying session, which resulted in starting from the fifth row. In my opinion, Ferrari did not make a good impression in the race by telling him that Carlos Sainz wouldn’t attack him,” Jean Alesi emphasizes. However, he then justifies the Maranello team’s decision, adding:

“But there is an understandable reason due to the need to push the pace to assess the behavior of the car and tires, avoiding complications caused by a battle between the two drivers.” Finally, Jean Alesi concluded by commenting: “In short, the signs are encouraging, but we need confirmation to understand the extent to which we can speak of a turning point.”
