Charles Leclerc: Ferrari endorses a quite necessary step for Project 676. Ferrari draws level with Red Bull with Project 676.

In Formula 1, the technical aspect is not the only one. Ferrari doesn’t lose just because of that. There are various components to consider in this sport. Moreover, we must take into account that, within the pinnacle of motorsport, almost everything needs to be decided in a matter of seconds during a race weekend. Choices that can radically change the outcome and, therefore, with the necessary experience in hand, must be made judiciously.

For Ferrari, this concept seems quite far from its way of being. This appears to be the most plausible explanation. Unlike other teams, even though tactical preparation is not lacking, a certain repeated difficulty emerges forcefully. It has been doing so for quite some time now. If we add to this that the efforts made during the winter turn out to be in vain, then a season becomes quite a failure. An example? The 2024 racing campaign.

The Italian team is stuck on itself. It cannot free itself from this performance torpor that has inhabited Maranello for too long. It has been trying for years, where the best intentions always show up, but in the end, when it’s time to take stock, the result of the work leads to the same outcome: losing. The frankness of these first sentences of the article is on par with Charles Leclerc’s opinion, aware of the long journey ahead to make the climb to the top effective.

The recently concluded championship disappointed him. The expectations during the project phase were too high, only to receive a severe blow already in February. In that month, through pre-season tests, the protagonists of Ferrari understood that the competitiveness of the SF-23 was far from what was hypothesized on paper. Hence Charles Leclerc’s reasoning about the future: closing the gap on Red Bull will be very tough considering their value.

Charles Leclerc has achieved what he wanted. We are talking about the ever-desired yearning for the opportunity to grip the Ferrari steering wheel in F1. He has even won some races, and in 2022, for about ten races, he even dreamed of being able to fight at the top with the Prancing Horse sewn on his suit. But fairy tales hardly last in real life, and the word defeat, precisely for this reason, once again imprints itself on the Ferrari driver’s mind.

Charles is not one to give up. He never will. He continues to swear loyalty and trust to Ferrari, hoping that even by accident (ironically), sooner or later, the Ferrari Racing Division will produce a very fast car. A car without weaknesses. A car like the RB19, just to be clear. In this context, Charles Leclerc would know how to move agilely thanks to the enormous talent he possesses. Has the moment come? Perhaps, who knows. On this matter, a counterintuitive reasoning needs to be addressed.

Modern F1 is no longer what it used to be. Cliché aside, the ten words that make up the previous sentence have a precise meaning, but they also possess the so-called flip side of the coin. Just because a driver is no longer able to influence the result as happened in past decades, there are other ways to add value to the car.

We are talking about simulation practices, research on the setup, the ability to adapt to the intrinsic characteristics of the car, and, last but not least, communicative skills with engineers in directing updates based on instinct. Yes, because let’s be clear: the only individual from a team that takes to the track is the driver, the one who drives in perfect symbiosis with the mechanical means. Everyone else is watching.

We are talking about a step that Charles Leclerc is about to take, as the historic Italian team, finally after too many years of waiting, has decided to build Project 676 in his image and likeness. Balancing the Max Verstappen-Red Bull equation in this regard was highly necessary. The only way to build a solid relationship that, once all the technical elements are achieved, puts an F1 team in a position to win.”
