Pirelli Head of Car Racing on the 2017 Monaco GP. Pirelli racing manager previews the next race.

The 2017 Monaco Grand Prix will most likely not provide any major surprises when it comes to the number of pit-stops given the special track characteristics of the the Circuit de Monaco and the weather predictions for Sunday, as official Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli is expecting this weekend’s event in Monaco to be a one-stop race but still thinks that strategy could play a major role in deciding the winner at Monte-Carlo. As expected, F1 teams will have the possibility to use the three softest compounds during this race weekend – ultra soft, super soft and soft.

Last season the Monaco GP was won at the end of on a one-stop strategy, although the conditions were somewhat different, being a wet-to-dry event. Throughout the weekend, tyre wear was not an issue and with this year’s Pirelli tyres designed to degrade a lot slower than previous season, a one-stop is well and truly the best solution for the next round of the 2017 Formula One championship, as recently confirmed by Pirelli racing manager, Mario Isola:

“The three softest compounds are the obvious choice for Monaco. But there is still plenty of scope for strategic variation. Wear and degradation is so low that the teams can more or less choose whenever they would like to make their single pit stop from Ultra Soft to Super Soft, which should be the standard choice for the race. This is the first Grand Prix that the drivers have been able to select their own tyre allocations. As expected, the nominations have overwhelmingly favoured the Ultra Soft. This is the tyre that will be used the most in both qualifying and the race.” – Pirelli’s Head of Car Racing Mario Isola said, as reported on Tuesday by Italian national sports newspaper based in Rome Corriere dello Sport.
