Home » Lewis Hamilton lacked full confidence in first Ferrari F1 run for this reason

Lewis Hamilton lacked full confidence in first Ferrari F1 run for this reason. Lewis Hamilton didn’t have the ‘right confidence’ during his first Ferrari F1 test for one reason.

Charles Leclerc, Ferrari SF-24 tires, 2024 F1

If Lewis Hamilton felt any nerves on his first day at Ferrari’s Fiorano circuit on Wednesday, he masked them completely. The seven-time world champion appeared poised as he embarked on his much-anticipated debut in Ferrari red.

Ferrari fans gathered in droves at the limited public viewing spots around the team’s private track, hoping to witness Hamilton create history. The bridge overlooking the circuit was packed ten-deep with excited Tifosi as Hamilton exited the garage at precisely 9:17 am local time, eager to familiarize himself with Ferrari’s 2023 Formula 1 car.

Due to strict testing regulations, Hamilton was restricted from driving last season’s SF-24, and Ferrari’s 2025 car won’t officially debut until February 19. This launch coincides with the F1 75 event in London, where all teams will unveil their liveries for the upcoming season. For now, Hamilton had to settle for a session in the older SF-23, which served as his initial step into Ferrari’s world.

Visibility was minimal as Fiorano was cloaked in dense fog, and Hamilton completed 30 laps under these challenging conditions. Charles Leclerc, also present, shared track time with Hamilton, but the times recorded by both drivers were far from representative, as the session primarily focused on reacquainting themselves with an F1 car after the winter break.

For Hamilton, the day wasn’t just about driving. It was an opportunity to begin acclimating to Ferrari’s unique systems and procedures, which are notably different from what he had grown accustomed to during his long tenure at Mercedes. Adapting to a new team is never straightforward, even for a driver of Hamilton’s experience, and this session marked the beginning of that learning curve.

A detailed report from Autoracer offered further insight into Hamilton’s first outing in the SF-23. While the Briton’s immense experience in Formula 1 gave him a solid foundation, he still faced obstacles that limited his confidence in the car.

Lewis Hamilton’s Complex Introduction to Ferrari at Fiorano
There were rumors that Ferrari might postpone Hamilton’s test due to the unfavorable weather conditions. Fiorano’s foggy mornings are typical for this time of year, but Ferrari ultimately decided to proceed with the session, knowing the Tifosi’s excitement and anticipation would not have been reason enough to call it off.

While the weather presented challenges, Hamilton’s laps in the wet could prove valuable in the long run. With rain always a possibility in Barcelona, where his next test is scheduled, this session might provide him with useful preparation. However, Bahrain, the traditional venue for pre-season testing, rarely delivers such conditions, meaning Hamilton’s future dry-weather tests will likely offer a more accurate gauge of his progress.

According to Autoracer, Hamilton was unable to fully push the car and struggled to build the “right confidence” due to issues with tire temperatures. The cold track temperatures and Fiorano’s outdated design—built in the 1970s—made it difficult for the SF-23 to generate sufficient heat in the tires, limiting Hamilton’s ability to extract peak performance from the car.

Despite these limitations, Hamilton began familiarizing himself with Ferrari’s power unit, which is markedly different from the Mercedes engines he’s worked with throughout his career. Adjusting to these nuances will be critical as he prepares for his first full season with Ferrari.

The Road Ahead: Hamilton’s Quest for Ferrari Glory
While testing is crucial, Hamilton’s true benchmark will be his performance once the 2025 season begins, starting with the Australian Grand Prix. This marks the first time in years that Bahrain won’t host the opening race, depriving Hamilton of the slight advantage he might have gained from extensive pre-season running at the Sakhir circuit.

Nevertheless, history presents an intriguing opportunity for Hamilton. Both Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel secured their first Ferrari victories within their opening two races for the team, in 2010 and 2015, respectively. Kimi Räikkönen even triumphed on his Ferrari debut in 2007. By contrast, Michael Schumacher took seven races to claim his maiden Ferrari win in 1996.

For Hamilton, achieving an early victory might be a tall order, particularly in Australia or China, given the competitive landscape of modern Formula 1. However, if he manages to win his seventh race with Ferrari, it would likely take place at Imola, in front of Ferrari’s adoring home crowd—a moment that would undoubtedly be etched in the sport’s history.

Lewis Hamilton’s first test at Fiorano may not have been perfect, but it was a pivotal step in his journey with Ferrari. As he works tirelessly to adapt to his new surroundings and refine his understanding of the car, all eyes will be on the British champion as he seeks to add yet another remarkable chapter to his illustrious career.
