Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard has voiced his belief that questions surrounding Lewis Hamilton’s perceived decline are both valid and worth examining.
The former British Formula 1 driver predicts that next year will provide a definitive test of Hamilton’s enduring abilities, as the seven-time world champion joins Ferrari to partner with Charles Leclerc. David Coulthard emphasized that Lewis Hamilton’s performance will be under intense scrutiny, particularly given Charles Leclerc’s reputation as one of the grid’s fastest drivers in qualifying. This follows a season where Lewis Hamilton has been consistently outperformed in qualifying by his current Mercedes teammate, George Russell.
“Lewis is rolling the dice again with Ferrari,” David Coulthard confirmed in a recent interview for Mirror Sport. “It may well lead to a rejuvenation of performance and a fight for the world championship. But it is going to be challenging because he has got [to beat] a very fast Charles Leclerc.”
Despite holding the all-time record of 104 career pole positions, Lewis Hamilton has openly acknowledged his struggles to match his previous one-lap pace this season. According to David Coulthard, the British driver’s hopes of achieving a record-breaking eighth Formula 1 world title hinge on his ability to regain his form on Saturdays, as strong qualifying performances will be crucial in his battle against a formidable new teammate.
“The key ingredient of all of the greats over the history of time has been to be able to qualify and race. And if Lewis, at 40 years old, has lost a yard in footballing terms, then he may well struggle to beat Charles over the course of a year. That is a legitimate question that anyone should be asking, but it is for him to show us. It is not about us putting him down and saying he cannot do it, because it is in his hands. All of these guys have it in their own hands to shape their own future.” – continued the British former racing driver and broadcaster from Scotland.
Drawing a parallel with Michael Schumacher’s career, the former McLaren and Red Bull driver cautioned that there is no certainty of a fairytale conclusion for Lewis Hamilton in Formula 1. Schumacher, widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers in the sport’s history, returned from retirement for a three-season stint with Mercedes. However, during that period, he was unable to secure a single race victory, serving as a stark reminder that even the most accomplished champions can face challenges in recapturing past glories: “Mercedes does not exist for Lewis Hamilton, and Lewis Hamilton has made it clear that he does not exist for Mercedes. In the same way, when Michael came back from retirement to sign for Mercedes, it was really shocking to imagine him being anything other than a Ferrari legend.” – David Coulthard added.
“But the draw of coming home to Mercedes, the desire and belief that he could do it still, brought him in. He did a couple of years, he did okay, but it was not the same as how he was in his first stint in Formula 1.” – he continued.

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes are undoubtedly eager to conclude their long-standing partnership on a triumphant note. However, recent performances suggest this may be an uphill battle. The British driver endured a challenging triple-header in Austin, Mexico, and São Paulo, culminating in his admission that his car felt worse than ever before. These struggles have cast doubt on whether a high note is achievable before the season’s end.
Despite this, David Coulthard remains hopeful that Hamilton can deliver a final moment of brilliance in his Mercedes career. The former racer shared his optimism, saying, *”He could very well win his last Grand Prix for Mercedes in Abu Dhabi, and what a fitting tribute to their incredible journey together that would be.”*
However, the former F1 driver also tempered expectations, acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding the remaining races. He remarked, *”Neither of us knows what the next few races will bring, but if he doesn’t secure that final win, it won’t be the celebratory farewell they might have envisioned for such a remarkable chapter.”*
