ESPN contract expires in 2025
The 2022 season remains the most-watched F1 championship on TV in the United States on average, but 2024 maintained excellent levels, slightly improving on 2023’s figures. This season, ESPN averaged 1.11 million viewers per GP, compared to 1.21 million in 2022.
The most-watched GP was Miami, which benefited from the lead-in of Game 7 of the NBA Playoff series between the Orlando Magic and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The race held at the circuit around the Hard Rock Stadium became the most-watched F1 event ever on American television.
2025 marks the final year of ESPN’s contract for F1 broadcasting rights. The network first acquired the rights in 2018 and renewed the agreement in 2022. It remains to be seen if ESPN will retain the rights to broadcast Formula 1 in the United States. Compared to 2018, the viewership has doubled, as the average in 2018 was 554,000 viewers.
