Ferrari gear up for critical mid-season overhaul amid SF-24 upgrades. Ferrari: Upgrades on the Horizon After the Summer Break.

Ferrari SF-24 sidepods side view

Given Red Bull’s early dominance in the start of the 2024 Formula 1 championship, Scuderia Ferrari’s emergence as serious contenders in May took many by surprise. After the Maranello team’s victory on the streets of Monte Carlo in Monaco, the Italian side looked poised to challenge the reigning champions in the battle for the 2024 Formula 1 Constructor Standings. However, since that splendid Sunday afternoon in Monaco, Ferrari’s performance has unfortunately slipped, especially when compared to the progress made by rivals McLaren and Mercedes.

Team boss Frederic Vasseur is undoubtedly aware of the pressing need for corrective measures immediately after the summer break. The recent upgrades introduced by the Maranello technicians have done more harm than good, allowing McLaren to overtake the Italian side in the standings. If not for George Russell’s disqualification at the 7.004-kilometre Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in the Belgian Grand Prix, Ferrari would even be under immediate threat of losing third place to Mercedes. With the situation becoming increasingly urgent, the Maranello team must take decisive action to reverse their fortunes in the second part of the 2024 Formula 1 campaign, while also focusing on the preparations for the upcoming championship, which will be the last year based on the current Formula 1 rules and regulation.

Upgrades on the Horizon After the Summer Break

While the summer break might seem like a chance for teams to catch their breath, in Formula 1 we know that the quest for improvement never stops. This season has already shown how a well-executed aerodynamic upgrade package can shake up the competitive order on track. For Scuderia Ferrari, the coming weeks are crucial for addressing several key issues. First, they need to understand why their previous updates, particularly those introduced at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, failed to deliver the expected results. Avoiding the return of the bouncing problem to the SF-24 single-seater after the break is a top priority.

On a broader scale, the Italian side must finalize their plans for the development direction regarding the car for the 2025 Formula 1 championship, when Lewis Hamilton will join Ferrari and will team up with Charles Leclerc. Frederic Vasseur is aware of the fact that they cannot afford to head into the winter break with unresolved development questions. Until the Ferrari technicians can definitively address their recent setbacks, any new updates will carry significant risks. Aston Martin’s recent struggles serve as a stark reminder of how quickly things can spiral out of control after a misstep. The team led by the French manager therefore needs to tackle their underlying issues this August, not just to salvage their 2024 Formula 1 season, but to lay a solid foundation for the next one.

The AM Will solve their problems in 1 year time, Ferrari on the other Will go deeper and deeper. Next year Will be even worst, and Vasseur Will give a huge amount of excuses…doesn’t really matter the updates if you have a team that are living a total chaos.
