On 4th August 1974, Clay Regazzoni won the German Grand Prix. The Swiss driver led from start to finish at the Nurburgring, having started from the front row alongside his team-mate Niki Lauda. Clay made the most of a bad start from the Austrian, who then went off the track immediately, after colliding with Scheckter in the Tyrrell, who was second at the flag. The 312 B3-1974 was a very quick car, as evidenced by its ten pole positions that year, but not that reliable, which meant the championship title slipped away right at the end, with Fittipaldi taking the title by just three points from Regazzoni.

Between 1970 and 1976, Clay Regazzoni took part in 74 Grands Prix with Ferrari, winning four and taking the same number of pole positions. In total he finished on the podium 23 times (apart from those wins, there were eleven seconds and eight third places) and 13 fastest race laps. His record also features wins in the 1972 Monza 1000 Kms, teamed with Ickx and in the 1971 Kyalami 9 Hours, with Redman and the following year with Merzario.

“Bon viveur, footballer, tennis player and, when nothing better to do, a driver: that’s how I described Clay Regazzoni, the brilliant and timeless Clay, the ideal guest of honour for any sort of fashionable event and a great resource for women’s magazines,” wrote Enzo Ferrari in his book ‘Piloti, che gente,’ – “he honed his skills in style and temperament, which was among the most audacious, until he became a great professional. His rivals always respected him.”

The 1970 Italian Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza on September 6, 1970. It was race 10 of 13 in both the 1970 World Championship of Drivers and the 1970 International Cup for Formula One Manufacturers. The race was marred by the death of Jochen Rindt, who died during the practice session on September 5 and went on to be Formula One’s only as to date posthumous World Champion.

The 68-lap race was won by Ferrari driver Clay Regazzoni after he started from third position. This was the last time that Monza was driven for 68 laps. From 1971 onwards, the race distance would be 55 laps.

Clay Regazzoni claimed his maiden Formula One victory at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in 1970, on a day when he made only his fifth career start with Ferrari

The 1974 Dutch Grand Prix was held at Circuit Zandvoort on 23 June 1974. It was race 8 of 15 in both the 1974 World Championship of Drivers and the 1974 International Cup for Formula One Manufacturers.

It was an all Ferrari front row after qualifying, with Niki Lauda sweeping to pole ahead of Clay Regazzoni. Two McLarens shared the second row, Emerson Fittipaldi ahead of Mike Hailwood, while Jody Scheckter would start the race from fifth alongside James Hunt.

There would be a fairly exciting start to the race on Sunday, with Lauda immediately slithering into the lead, ahead of a fast starting Hailwood. Regazzoni slipped to third ahead of Patrick Depailler, up from eighth, while Hunt made a terrible start before collecting Tom Pryce in turn one, eliminating the pair of them.

The order of the top six was settled for the the rest of the race, with Niki Lauda establishing a lead over teammate Clay Regazzoni, who was himself thirty seconds clear of Fittipaldi. Lauda was therefore left to claim a second career win ahead of Regazzoni, while Fittipaldi did little to close the gap in third

The 28th March 1976 was a perfect day for Clay Regazzoni. On the Long Beach street circuit, the Swiss driver took pole position in his Ferrari on the Saturday, ahead of Patrick Depailler in the Tyrrell, James Hunt in the McLaren and Niki Lauda in the other 312 T2. In the race, Clay got away well and hung onto the lead. A few laps later Depailler and Hunt collided at the hairpin before the finish line, which cost the whole group a lot of time.

Regazzoni was now heading for the win, but he wasn’t taking it easy. He also set the fastest race lap and crossed the line over 40 seconds ahead of Lauda. The race brought the Swiss driver the great satisfaction of thus taking the first pole, win, fastest lap triple of his career, leading from start to finish. It was on this very track, five years later, that Regazzoni would have the accident in an Ensign that would consign him to a wheel chair for the rest of his life.

On 15th December 2006, Gian Claudio Giuseppe Regazzoni died at Fontevivo, (Parma, Italy) after suffering a stroke when on his own at the wheel of a car. Born in Lugano on 5 September 1939, he was known in racing circles as Clay. From 1970 to 1975 Regazzoni took part in 74 Grands Prix for Ferrari, winning four and securing the same number of pole positions. He also notched up a total of 23 podium finishes, as apart from the wins there were eleven second places and eight thirds, as well as thirteen race fastest laps. His record also boasts victory in the 1972 Monza 1000 Kilometres, teamed with Ickx and in the 1971 Kyalami 9 Hours, paired with Redman, a feat he repeated the following year with Merzario.

The Swiss driver also competed in Formula 1 with BRM, Ensign, Shadow and Williams: with the latter, he won the 1979 British Grand Prix. Other wins worthy of note were the 1970 European Formula 2 Championship.

On 30th May 1980, at Long Beach during the United States West Grand Prix, Regazzoni had a brake problem on his Ensign and ended up crashing into Zunino’s Brabham, which had stopped in an escape road on the street circuit. Serious injuries to his legs left him a paraplegic.

The 1970 Mexican Grand Prix was held at the Ciudad Deportiva Magdalena Mixhuca in Mexico City on October 25, 1970. It was race 13 of 13 in both the 1970 World Championship of Drivers and the 1970 International Cup for Formula One Manufacturers. The 65-lap race was won by Ferrari driver Jacky Ickx after he started from third position. His teammate Clay Regazzoni finished second and McLaren driver Denny Hulme came in third.

Ickx wasn’t able to close the points gap to the late Jochen Rindt in the final races of the season, and as result the latter was awarded the championship posthumously, becoming the only driver to ever win the title after death.

Clay Regazzoni started from pole position in a Ferrari, with Stewart second on the grid in his Tyrrell and Jacky Ickx starting third in the other Ferrari. Brabham, in one of his own cars, was fourth on the grid, and Chris Amon in a March and Jean-Pierre Beltoise in a Matra were fifth and sixth. Rodriguez started from seventh in a BRM.

On Lap 2, Jacky Ickx, the Ferrari team leader, quickly passed his teammate to take the lead, and Stewart, close behind him also passed Regazzoni.

Then, after 14 laps, Stewart made a pit stop as his steering column had come loose, and that put the Ferraris back in first and second. Brabham moved into third, which would have been a fabulous end to his career, but his engine blew on Lap 53 of the 65-lap race. Stewart returned to the race, and on Lap 33 he hit and killed a large dog that was running across the track.

As the two Ferraris cruised on in the lead, toward the end of the race some spectators began running back and forth across the track, perhaps daring to see if they could fare better than the dog.

In the end, the Ferraris, with Jacky Ickx leading Clay Regazzoni, came in first and second, and Denny Hulme finished in third in a McLaren. Amon finished fourth, and Beltoise finished fifth. Rodríguez finished sixth.

After the race, the spectators invaded the track, forcing cars to stop abruptly after they crossed the finish line because there was no room for them to drive.

The Mexican Grand Prix was removed from the calendar the following year because of that chaos. It returned to the schedule 16 years later, from 1986 to 1992, and was reinstated again in 2015 to resounding success because of the enthusiasm of the spectators, who remained orderly.

Formula One has since instituted strict safety measures for both drivers and spectators.

On 20th September 1970, Jacky Ickx won the Canadian Grand Prix. It was the second of three wins that the Belgian secured while with Ferrari. However, it was not enough to give him the title crown, which went posthumously to Austria’s Jochen Rindt, who was killed a fortnight earlier at the Italian Grand Prix. With the works Lotus team absent following the tragedy at Monza, the main rival to the Ferrari 312 B at the Mont Tremblant track was the Tyrrell of Jackie Stewart, who took pole position and dominated the early stages of the race. On lap 32, the Scotsman had to retire when a halfshaft broke, leaving the way clear for Jacky Ickx, who himself had a comfortable lead over his team-mate Clay Regazzoni, the gap being maintained to the chequered flag.

Scuderia Ferrari scored one of its greatest victories in the Italian Grand Prix on September 7, in 1975. Clay Reggazoni (No. 11) won the race before the home crowd at Monza, while his teammate Niki Lauda (No. 12) finished third—good enough to bring him the 1975 Formula One World Championship. With Regazzoni and Lauda scoring 13 points between them, Ferrari also secured the International Cup for Formula One Manufacturers, their first such win since 1964.

As usual, Ferrari’s founder did not attend the race. But Luca Dal Monte describes his reaction vividly in his biography, Enzo Ferrari: Power, Politics, and the Making of an Automotive Empire: “One hundred and twenty miles away from the chaotic Monza celebration, in the quiet solitude of his blue-walled office, Enzo rejoiced. He had waited eleven years, but, at last, he was World Champion again.”

On 27th January 1974, the Brazilian Grand Prix, the second round of that year’s Formula 1 World Championship took place in Sao Paulo. At Interlagos, the Scuderia fielded Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni, both at the wheel of the 312 B3-1974. In qualifying, the Austrian was third fastest, while the Swiss was eighth. It was a very short race for Niki, who had to retire after a handful of laps because of an engine problem. As for Clay, he did a good job of flying the Prancing Horse colours, putting on a great climb up the order which eventually took him to second place, 13 seconds down on the winner, Emerson Fittipaldi. These two were the only ones credited with going the distance: the race was interrupted with eight laps to go because of torrential rain.

The result took Clay Regazzoni into the lead of the championship classification with 10 points, one more than the McLaren duo of Fittipaldi and Hulme, while Lauda was fourth with 6 points. Regazzoni also had the satisfaction of setting the race fastest lap.
