On his day, he was the best of the best. Carlos Reutemann never claimed the F1 world title, but with 12 Grand Prix wins and a fascinating personality, the Argentinian racer left his mark on the world of Formula 1 forever.

Carlos Reutemann raced for Scuderia Ferrari in 1976 (one Grand Prix), then was a regular in 1977 and 1978, with a total 33 races, five wins, two poles and two fastest laps for the Maranello team:

Former Ferrari driver Carlos Reutemann 'lucid' after latest hospital procedure

Carlos Reutemann’s condition had deteriorated in the last couple of days after he suffered further issues with haemorrhaging while in the intensive care unit of a health centre in the city of Santa Fe, Argentina. His daughter confirmed it, saying: “Dad left in peace and dignity after fighting like a champion with a noble and strong heart that accompanied him until the end”.

The former F1 driver and current Senator in Argentina had been hospitalised on 30 May and was moved to the ICU on 21 June, remaining there ever since.

Previously Reutemann spent 17 days in the hospital during May.

He was admitted with anaemia and dehydration, but his condition worsened due to previous issues with gastrointestinal bleeding and deteriorating kidney function. His problems were related to liver cancer he was diagnosed with in 2017.

Reutemann’s death is a major loss for Argentina as he was the most successful driver of the South American country in Formula 1 after the initial path set by the likes of Juan Manuel Fangio and Jose Froilan Gonzalez in the 1950s.

Reutemann was able to excel in F1 during a ten-year span between 1972 and 1982 in a competitive era for the series.

In terms of race wins, his final Ferrari season in 1978 was his most successful with four wins, but he fell short to the consistency of the Lotus team with Mario Andretti and the late Ronnie Peterson and was not in championship contention to the final race

Following his retirement from F1 after the first two races of the 1982 season and having also made two World Rally Championship starts with two podium finishes in Argentina (1980 and 1985), Reutemann turned his attention to politics in his country.

Former Scuderia Ferrari driver Carlos Reutemann, who was transferred to intensive care in hospital last weekend, has undergone a procedure and is reported to be “lucid”.

The Argentine ex-Formula 1 driver, who won 12 races during a career that encompassed 11 seasons in the 1970s and 80s, suffered a digestive haemorrhage last Wednesday.

The 79-year-old was taken to a hospital in his home city of Santa Fe and was said to be in a “stable condition” on Friday, but was then transferred by helicopter to an intensive care unit in Rosario after his condition worsened with internal bleeding.

In their latest medical bulletin, the Sanatorio Rosario hospital declared Reutemann’s condition had improved, saying the politician – he is the governor of the Santa Fe province – was “lucid” and there had been no signs of further digestive bleeding after the procedure.

“Hospitalised in ICU, lucid, in communication with the environment, with no other organ failure,” read a statement from the hospital. “No signs of digestive bleeding since the endoscopic haemostasis procedure performed yesterday [Tuesday].”

The victory at Zolder was Reutemann’s last in the sport before retiring after only the first two races of the following campaign, a few weeks before his 40th birthday, with his exit from the Williams team rumoured to have been a consequence of the Falklands War that was happening at the time between the UK and Argentina.

He took part in 146 grands prix and subsequently moved into politics, even being regarded at one time as a contender for his country’s presidency – although he never actually declared his candidacy to run for that office.

Former Scuderia Ferrari driver Carlos Reutemann is in intensive care in his native Argentina after being hospitalized with internal bleeding

Reutemann (pictured above after winning the British GP in 1978 for Ferrari) was admitted to a private hospital in Santa Fe on Thursday with what a medical bulletin described as “a hemorrhage of the digestive system,” with tests to be carried out. There has been no further update as to the outcome of those tests or the ongoing condition of the 79-year-old, but doctors have ruled out coronavirus.
Reutemann entered 146 races in an impressive Formula 1 career, finishing runner-up in the drivers’ championship to Nelson Piquet in 1981 when driving for Williams. On that occasion, he was leading the championship heading into the final round and started from pole in Las Vegas but failed to score.

Reutemann won four races for Ferrari in 1978, including a sweep of both USGPs that year at Long Beach and Watkins Glen.

Reutemann’s first victory came for Brabham in 1974, and he also picked up victories for Ferrari along with a total of 45 podiums. As well as coming close to the title in 1981, Reutemann ranked third in three other seasons — once each for Brabham, Ferrari and Williams — and also had two entries in the World Rally Championship, finishing on the podium on both occasions in his home rally.

After his racing career, Reutemann went into politics and served twice as the governor of Santa Fe. He is currently in the final year of his mandate as a member of the Argentine Senate.

On 8th December 2004, a surprise test took place at the Fiorano track; unusual not because a Formula 1 car was running out of season, which was the norm back then, but rather because of who was the driver. In the cockpit of the F2004 that Michael Schumacher and the Scuderia had only recently taken to a fifth consecutive double world title, having won 15 of 18 races, was no young talent, but instead a man who, thirty years earlier had played an important part in the team’s history, Carlos Reutemann.

The Argentinian had arrived in Maranello the previous day to rediscover the team with which he’d been a front runner in the second half of the Seventies. Reutemann was a race driver from the end of 1976 to 1978, winning one Constructors’ crown in 1977 and five Grands Prix. Welcomed by the Managing Director Jean Todt, Reutemann visited both the Gestione Sportiva and the Gestione Industriale and had a phone conversation with President Montezemolo, who was in China at the time. It was in fact a conversation with the sporting director about his experience as a Ferrari man that led to the idea of him taking a turn in the car that had won that year’s Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles. So, the following morning, Reutemann arrived in Fiorano where engineers and mechanics were awaiting him for a really unusual test. On his feet were the same shoes he used when he was racing and on his head, a helmet with his old colours of yellow and blue. Lole did a handful of runs, completing a total of 17 laps.

“It was an unforgettable experience,” said Reutemann afterwards. “I want to thank Ferrari for organising this run, even though it’s a holiday today and for allowing me to feel these emotions and I really had a lot of fun! The car is impressive, especially in terms of the power of the engine. It’s a whole new world compared to the cars I drove in my day. On the television, today’s Formula 1 car can look easy, but having tried it for myself, I can say that’s not the case!”

The 1977 Japanese Grand Prix was held on 23 October 1977 at Fuji. It was the 17th and final race of the 1977 Formula One World Championship. At the time, this was the last Japanese Grand Prix due to traveling and financial issues, and safety concerns with the Fuji circuit, it was also the last Japanese Grand Prix to be held at Fuji Speedway until 2007. The race would return in 1987, held at the better spectated and safer Suzuka Circuit.

Mario Andretti and James Hunt continued their late-season battle, with the American pipping Hunt to the pole, with John Watson heading the second row. Hunt took the lead at the start, and Jody Scheckter and Jochen Mass jumped up to second and third, whereas Andretti had a terrible start and was at the tail of the top ten. On the second lap, Andretti was involved in a collision while trying to gain places, putting him out with Binder and Takahara. With Andretti out, Hunt had no challengers left and he built a large gap, with teammate Mass second and Watson passing Scheckter for third. However, both Mass and Watson had to retire within one lap of each other with engine and gearbox failures, and with Scheckter dropping back, Scuderia Ferrari driver Carlos Reutemann was second until he was passed by Jacques Laffite. Hunt went on and capped off the season with a comfortable win, whereas Laffite ran of fuel on the last lap, handing over second to Reutemann and allowing Patrick Depailler to complete the podium.

After the race concluded, both Hunt and Reutemann left the circuit immediately to catch a flight home, leaving Depailler and his engineer on the podium. Rules changed shortly thereafter making the podium celebration mandatory.

Fuji’s place in F1 folklore seemed assured, but tragedy was to ensure it was short-lived. During this race, Gilles Villeneuve collided with Ronnie Peterson’s Tyrrell and his Ferrari speared into a crowd of marshals and photographers who were stood in a restricted area, killing two of them. They had both been standing in a prohibited area of the track when the accident occurred. F1 didn’t return the following year.

On 9th January 1977, the Argentinian Grand Prix, the first round of that year’s Formula 1 World Championship took place at Buenos Aires. The Scuderia fielded Niki Lauda and local hero Carlos Reutemann, in his second race for the Prancing Horse after making his debut at Monza the previous year. Both men were in the 312 T2, which has contested the 1976 season, updated particularly on the aerodynamic front. Making its first appearance on the Maranello cars was the Fiat logo.

In qualifying, Lauda was fourth fastest, but over a second down on reigning champion Hunt in the Mclaren, while Reutemann qualified seventh. In the race, the Austrian had to retire on lap 20 with an engine problem, but in the closing states the Argentinian managed to secure a podium finish in third place. The race was won by Jody Scheckter in the Wolf car that was making its debut that day.
