Gerhard Berger, a Ferrari legend, has criticized the Ferrari senior management’s call to restructure the Formula 1 team last year, stating that they panicked and as a result made the decision to sack the wrong members of the team.
The Italian side has undergone a significant technical shake-up since the end of the previous championship, with team principal Fred Vasseur joining the Ferrari Racing Division as team principal from Alfa Romeo. Mattia Binotto previously held the position for four years after being promoted from chief technical officer to take over following the departure of Maurizio Arrivabene. However, the Italian manager gradually lost the faith of fans and the Ferrari senior management due to a series of errors made last year, which prevented the Maranello team from challenging Red Bull for the Formula 1 titles, despite a solid start to the 2022 F1 season, with two race wins in the first three races for Charles Leclerc.
Scuderia Ferrari’s transition has not been an easy one: despite being expected to fight against Red Bull for race wins this year, Ferrari has lost a lot of ground not only against the Austrian side, but alos other rivals such as Aston Martin and Mercedes.
Gerhard Berger, who made his Ferrari debut in 1987 and secured ten race victories during his long Formula 1 career, admitted that he did not agree with some of Ferrari’s recent recruitment decisions, as confirmed in a recent interview for Austrian news outlet oe24:
“They lost their nerve and kicked out the wrong people.” – the former Formula 1 driver pointed out, as quoted by oe24.
