The end of the 2022 Formula 1 season also meant the end of the collaboration between Scuderia Ferrari and Mick Schumacher. In fact, the young German driver, following in his father’s footsteps, left the Maranello team in favor of Mercedes, although in this case it is “only” a departure from the Ferrari Academy. The decision taken is an important starting point for reflection on the trust in the two top teams and their future prospects.
After watching him grow up at Ferrari over the past four years, it’s a strange feeling to see him in the Mercedes race suit. However, this is the future of Mick Schumacher.
The decision was clearly not an easy one to make, but the German has shown that it is the right one for him. On the other hand, after having had an opportunity in Haas – one of the motorized teams linked to Ferrari – Mick Schumacher found himself excluded from the sport, in favor of Nico Hulkenberg. The German and Kevin Magnussen, reconfirmed by Guenther Steiner, certainly have more experience than Mick, but the young German driver still had something to prove and a solid margin for improvement.
Joining Mercedes can therefore open up new perspectives for him. With the Silver Arrow, Mick could aim to combine what he learned in Ferrari with what the Brackley team can give him and it would also open up a range of new teams, previously inaccessible for him. Furthermore, although Lewis Hamilton is very focused on winning and on Formula 1, he loves racing and is in top form, sooner or later he will have to retire. This would free up a very desirable seat.
However, Uncle Ralf (a former F1 driver himself), stressed that Mick’s arrival at Mercedes is a great deal for both parties. Thinking about the hypothesis of the future, in fact, the Brackley team can “accompany” a young man who has already gained two years of experience in the sport with two top-level drivers, such as Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Let’s keep in mind the point mentioned earlier, which is that at some point Lewis retires. The team could take advantage of a boy already trained by both drivers and moreover with two years already active in Formula 1.

Let’s also assume that both the team and the driver are German. This pairing would be an appealing idea for a giant like Daimler AG, who would be more than happy to hear a single anthem on the podium.

The goal with which Mick Schumacher retraces his father’s footsteps is the same: to win a world title. If such a statement may appear naive at this moment, the impression is even more prominent when the driver who makes it has just been “rejected” by a minor team. However, the German believes he is still sure that he too can fight and win a world title, without fear of being presumptuous.
“I’m generally not the cocky or arrogant type. I was always told not to be, and the lesson has stuck with me since I was very young. I don’t care what people think of me because I know what I do and the moment I have a way to prove it, people will notice,” he told The-Race.
In fact, the young man remembers having achieved excellent results by winning the title already in Formula 2 and Formula 3, and is aware of his abilities, which are worthy of the most important motorsport series. “I have always shown that I am up to it: in any category I have always reached the top quite quickly. And I can also do it in Formula 1: I will be able to win the world championship at the right time, with the right car”.
This shifts the focus to the two top teams: the right car to win the world championship is therefore Mercedes rather than Ferrari for the former FDA member.
