Home » Former Ferrari junior Mick Schumacher opens up on prospects of returning to Formula 1

Former Ferrari junior Mick Schumacher opens up on prospects of returning to Formula 1. Mick Schumacher is determined to return to F1 as early as 2025.

F1 Market, Mick Schumacher Hopeful

There are few seats available for F1 2025, and many drivers naturally hope to secure a spot. Among them is someone who has already been in Formula 1 and wants a second chance: Mick Schumacher, who has often been linked to Alpine (of which he is part of the WEC program) and Kick Sauber. In practice, the only open door seems to be the latter, as the French team intends to promote Jack Doohan. With Mercedes and RB effectively closed, the only feasible route is Sauber, the weakest team in the field. However, this team will become Audi in 2026 and could field an all-German pairing of Hülkenberg-Schumacher, although there are other contenders for that seat: Valtteri Bottas’s chances of staying have increased in recent weeks, and names like Theo Pourchaire and Gabriel Bortoleto have also been mentioned.

    Mick Schumacher’s comments

Regarding his future, the son of Kaiser Michael said: “We’ll have to wait and see; I think everything is very open in Formula 1 at the moment. There are still three or four teams that have seats available: one driver, in particular, was the bottleneck (referring to Carlos Sainz, ed.),” these were his words to the Divebomb portal. “Now there will definitely be many movements in other teams, and I think everything will move quite quickly.” – the former Ferrari junior explained.

“Many teams don’t have the pressure to make a decision right now, which also leaves me a bit in suspense. However, Formula 1 will always be the priority in everything I do, so as long as it’s not completely closed off for me, I’ll wait and focus on that,” he concluded.

The Two Years at Haas

In his two-year stint in Formula 1 (2021-22), Mick Schumacher scored 12 championship points, all in 2022. It was a season in which the German faced an experienced driver as a teammate (Kevin Magnussen) for the first time. The Dane scored more than double the points—25—despite losing the head-to-head race comparison with Mick Schumacher 10-6. The then-team principal, Günther Steiner, mainly looked at the standings and did not give #47 any further opportunities, replacing him with Nico Hülkenberg starting in 2023.
