s the sixteenth race of the year unfolds, all the drivers on the grid have now reached the limit of the four usable power units. There are even those who have already exceeded the annual cap, reaching a total of five engines. Specifically, these are the Alfa Romeo of Zhou and the Haas cars of Magnussen and Hulkenberg, all three powered by Ferrari. The Mercedes teams, on the other hand, show greater durability, with Hamilton, Piastri, Alonso, Stroll, and Sargeant being able to complete all the races before Suzuka with only three power units. The same goes for the Red Bull duo, who didn’t install their fourth seasonal engine until the Japanese Grand Prix.
With six races to go, the current situation is one where everyone is at risk of grid penalties. In case of technical issues, the teams have no flexibility left to install new components without consequences. The only one who can afford minor troubles is Lando Norris, but only for the compressor, MGU-K, and MGU-H. Reliability could, therefore, play a significant role in the various battles across the standings. The overall limit of components extends beyond just power units; it also encompasses transmissions. The exceptions are McLaren, Mercedes, Fernando Alonso, and Valtteri Bottas.
