Former Scuderia Ferrari German driver Sebastian Vettel is set to participate in this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, where he will showcase his classic Formula 1 car collection. Among the vehicles he will be driving are a Williams once owned by Nigel Mansell and a McLaren that once belonged to Ayrton Senna. Sebastian Vettel has made it clear that he will only drive cars that run on sustainable fuels to promote the ‘Race without a trace’ initiative. This cause was highlighted when the former Ferrari man drove the iconic 1992 Williams FW14B at Silverstone during the British Grand Prix weekend last year.
Goodwood has officially confirmed that Sebastian Vettel will drive several of his personal cars at the festival, including his 1993 McLaren MP4/8, which was previously purchased by Bernie Ecclestone at an auction.
The four-time Formula One world champion last attended the Festival of Speed more than a decade ago, when he was racing for Red Bull. Sebastian Vettel confirmed that “it’s great to be coming back to Goodwood after all these years. I can’t wait to get behind the wheel of some of my most memorable cars which will be running on sustainable fuel over the weekend. I’m a passionate racer and it’s important to me that we continue to enjoy driving iconic racing cars today and in the future, but that we do so in a responsible way.” – he added.
The former Formula 1 driver admitted last year that the early-90s era that both of these cars raced in is special to him because his “first memories” of the sport date back to those times. After the great experience of getting behind the wheel of the Williams at the Silverstone circuit, he admitted that “I felt like a five-year-old again, because the sound, everything, just brought me back to 30 years ago.” – concluded Sebastian Vettel, who drove for the Maranello team between 2015 and 2020.

The German driver pointed out that his intention is to find sustainable fuel the cars could run on because he wanted to “keep these cars and the history alive” but at the same time doing this it “in a responsible way”. He has previously mentioned that although he purchased the cars with the intention of driving them, he would refrain from doing so if he couldn’t find eco-friendly fuels for them to run on.
Before Sebastian Vettel’s Silverstone drive, he had already tested the Senna McLaren in a private session, where he was able to get more accustomed to the car and push it to its limits.
