Very rarely does a Formula 1 race come down to the last corner of the last lap and while it didn’t exactly do that at the 1958 Belgian Grand Prix, it nearly did. When you look back at the results of the race you wouldn’t be able to tell that either but all three podium finishers faced a challenge getting to the finishing line resulting in what was nearly one of the craziest race endings in Formula 1 history.

On the last lap, Brooks came out of La Source to end the race, and his gearbox seized as he crossed the line. When Ferrari driver Mike Hawthorn was coming out of the same corner to end his race in second, his engine failed as he was coming to the finish line. Stuart Lewis-Evans’s suspension collapsed on the way into La Source, and he crawled to the line in third. This race also marked the first points finish for Lotus when Cliff Allison came across the line in fourth.

Mike Hawthorn eventually finished in P2 for the Maranello team.

What is the greatest Formula 1 race of all time? With 13 lead changes and a strong battle to the end of the race between Maserati and Ferrari, the 1953 French Grand Prix at Reims was described as ‘The Race of the Century’.

In the latest of Autosport’s “Short View Back to the Past” series, Chief Editor Kevin Turner rflects on Mike Hawthorn’s first ever win. Hawthorn won for Ferrari after a sixty lap battle with Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio, as they reportedly swapped the lead at virtually every corner on the Reims circuit. In addition, after 500 km of racing, the four lead cars were less than 5 seconds apart:

The 1954 Spanish Grand Prix held on 24 October 1954 at Pedralbes. It was the ninth and final race in the 1954 World Championship of Drivers.

The 80-lap race was won by Ferrari driver Mike Hawthorn after he started from third position. Luigi Musso finished second for the Maserati team and Mercedes driver Juan Manuel Fangio came in third.

The Ferrari team were not in a very happy state, having only two drivers available, Hawthorn and Trintignant, for Farina was still in hospital and Gonzalez was not fully recovered from the arm injury he received at Dundrod. Since Monza the Maranello firm had been doing some intensive experimenting and testing and Hawthorn had a modified version of the “stumpy” 553 model. This had coil springs for the front suspension in place of the usual transverse leaf-spring and rubber block, and in fact was the first Ferrari to be fitted with coil-spring suspension. The wishbone layout was unaltered, but an anti-roll bar had been fitted running under the front of the car.

The long-awaited Lancia D50s arrived-using their 90 degree V8 engine as a stiffening aid for the chassis; they were simple but brilliantly designed. Ascari immediately set the fastest practice lap and led from pole.

Villoresi in the fellow Lancia retired with brake trouble after just 1 lap and Ascari succumbed to clutch problems after 9 laps.

Various other drivers took the lead and then retired-Schell spun off, Trintignant had mechanical problems and Moss overheated (one of several retirements caused by flying newspaper jamming the radiator ducts). The race boiled down to a duel between Hawthorn and Fangio but the Argentine was losing oil and lost second place to Musso. Hawthorn hung on to take the win with Fangio driving well to claim the final podium position.

This proved to be the last major race held at the Pedralbes street circuit. The Le Mans disaster in 1955 meant tighter safety regulations, and the spectator-lined street circuit in the Pedralbes neighborhood of Barcelona was abandoned and has not been used since.

The 1958 Moroccan Grand Prix was held at Ain-Diab Circuit, Casablanca on 19 October 1958, after a six-week break following the Italian Grand Prix. It was race 11 of 11 in the 1958 World Championship of Drivers and race 10 of 10 in the 1958 International Cup for Formula One Manufacturers. It is the only time Morocco has hosted a World Championship Grand Prix.

Mike Hawthorn (Ferrari) started from pole position and finished second, which secured him the World Drivers’ Championship. Phil Hill was third, also for Ferrari.

After clinching the F1 World Drivers’ Championship, Mike Hawthorn then hung up his boots, helmet and infamous bow tie. He announced his retirement having been profoundly affected by the death of his teammate and friend Peter Collins two months earlier in the 1958 German Grand Prix.

On 19th July 1958, Ferrari driver Peter Collins won the British Grand Prix, held at Silverstone circuit. It was race 7 of 11 in the 1958 World Championship of Drivers and race 6 of 10 in the 1958 International Cup for Formula One Manufacturers.

At the wheel of a 246 F1, the Englishman took his third and last Formula 1 victory, finishing ahead of his team-mate, friend and fellow countryman Mike Hawthorn. The win came a couple of weeks after the tragic French Grand Prix held on 6th July, when Ferrari driver Luigi Musso lost his life. But death had not finished taking its toll on Formula 1 and, on 3rd August at the Nurbugring, on lap 11 of the 15 lap German Grand Prix, it was Collins in fact who paid the highest price possible for his love of racing.

On 19th January 1958, the Argentinian Grand Prix was held in Buenos Aires, as the first round of that year’s world championship. Only ten drivers took part, of which no less than nine were at the wheel of cars built in Italy: there were six Maseratis entered by private teams and three Ferrari 246 F1s, entered by the official Maranello Scuderia.

With the race set to be held in very hot conditions the race was shortened from 400 kilometres to 313. The shorter race led the Walker team to consider running the race without stopping for tyres. The car’s four stud wheels would take almost two laps to complete a tyre change, much slower than their Ferrari and Maserati rivals.

In the end, it was the only British car, the Cooper, that won with Stirling Moss at the wheel. Alongside him on the podium were Ferrari drivers Luigi Musso and Mike Hawthorn, while the third car, in the hands of Peter Collins, had to retire at the start with a broken half-shaft. The local hero, reigning World Champion Manuel Fangio, finished fourth in his Maserati, despite having started from pole and setting the race fastest lap.
