The 1964 United States Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held on October 4, 1964, at the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Race Course in Watkins Glen, New York. It was race 9 of 10 in both the 1964 World Championship of Drivers and the 1964 International Cup for Formula One Manufacturers. The 110-lap race was won by BRM driver Graham Hill after he started from fourth position. John Surtees finished second for the Ferrari team and Brabham driver Jo Siffert came in third.

Graham Hill padded his tenuous lead in the 1964 Drivers’ Championship over John Surtees and Jim Clark by bringing his BRM home first at The Glen for the second straight year. Surtees was second for Ferrari, 30.5 seconds back.

The Ferrari team brought four cars for John Surtees and Lorenzo Bandini, but they were not in the usual “flaming red” that the race program advertised. Enzo Ferrari had surrendered his entrant’s license in a dispute at Monza, so the cars were entered by Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team and were painted in North American racing blue and white. The only entrant missing from the 20 who were invited was American A. J. Foyt, who was offered a works BRM drive for the race, but decided against it.

A season finale at Mexico City. John Surtees takes the 1964 F1 World Championship for Ferrari. This was also the last time that our cars raced in any colour other than Rosso Corsa.

It was perhaps the most dramatic finale in the history of the World Championship:

In order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of John Surtees’ 1964 Formula One World Championship triumph, Ferrari Premium Partner Shell proudly presented John Surtees and Scuderia Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen at the fabled Goodwood Festival of Speed Hillclimb on Sunday 29 June 2014.

Two world championship winning Ferrari drivers ascended the hill in formation in the cars they won their respective titles in — John Surtees in his 1964 Ferrari 158 and Kimi Räikkönen in his 2007 Ferrari F2007. Surtees’ first race was in the sidecar of his father’s Vincent, but they were disqualified when officials found out that John was just 14 years old. Like Kimi, John won his championship in his first season with Ferrari.

On 6th September 1964, John Surtees won the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix for Scuderia Ferrari. It was the Englishman’s second victory of the championship and was also a decisive factor in his taking the title. John Surtees arrived in Monza with 19 points to his name, a long way off the two main contenders for title glory: Graham Hill (BRM) was leading on 32 points, two more than Jim Clark (Lotus).

Qualifying smiled on Scuderia Ferrari, with John Surtees securing pole position in his 158 F1, ahead of Gurney and Hill in the BRMs. At the start, Hill was let down by his clutch and was left stuck on the grid, just as had happened at Zeltweg two weeks earlier. McLaren in the Cooper, worked his way into the lead, followed by Surtees and Gurney, the three of them fighting it out in a slipstreaming battle: the Cooper driver rapidly lost ground, leaving the way clear for the other two to continue overtaking one another back and forth until Gurney began to experience engine troubles that relegated himself to fourth place. Surtees was thus able to bring home nine points which saw him leap to just four points off Hill and two from Clark, with two Grands Prix still to go. Also on the podium was McLaren and Surtees’ team-mate, Bandini, who had won the previous race in Austria.

On 12th June 1966, the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix was held at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Dominating qualifying was John Surtees in the Ferrari. The 1964 World Champion left the others trailing in his wake on the 14.1 km Ardennes circuit at the wheel of a 312 F1-66, in a time of 3.38.0, 3.2 seconds faster than Austria’s Jochen Rindt (Cooper) and 3.5 ahead of Jackie Stewart in the BRM. Lorenzo Bandini, in a 246 F1-66, was fifth.

The Belgian Grand Prix got underway under threatening skies: John Surtees went into the lead but halfway round the opening lap, the pack got caught up in a proper storm. Surtees came through the tempest unscathed, but Bonnier, Spence, Siffert, Hulme were less fortunate and all went out. Rindt had a scary spin, avoiding the barriers and was able to keep going.

Then, Stewart, Graham Hill and Bob Bondurant also spun, the American destroying his car but escaping unscathed. Hill realised that Stewart was injured and stopped to help. Hill managed to get Stewart out, his race suit soaked in petrol, just a few seconds before his car caught fire, thus saving the Scot from certain death.

Of 18 starters, only 7 finished the opening lap. Rindt proved to be an ace in the wet, managing to catch Surtees and passing him to take the lead. When the track began to dry however, the superiority of John Surtees’ Ferrari became clear and the English champion retook the lead. Only five drivers finished: John Surtees the winner, securing the third triple of his career, as apart from the win and pole he also set the fastest race lap, followed by Rindt and Bandini.
