On 3rd October 1971, the USA Grand Prix took place at Watkins Glen, as the last round of the season. Just like the rest of that year, the final Formula 1 race of 1971 was not particularly favourable for the Scuderia. At Watkins Glen, its best result was a sixth place for Clay Regazzoni with the 312 B2, while Jacky Ickx had to retire his 312 B because of alternator problems ten laps from the finish. The Belgian had driven a good race, which, at one point, had seen him harass the leader and eventual winner, Cevert.

However, yet another reliability problem that season forced him to slow and then stop for good. The only and rather scant consolation for Ickx came in the shape of him setting the race fastest lap.
