Jean Alesi explains why he doesn’t view Ferrari’s performance in Mexico as negative. Jean Alesi opens up on the performance of Ferrari in Mexico City.

Scuderia Ferrari experienced another rollercoaster weekend in the 2023 Formula 1 season, this time at the 4.304-kilometre Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City last Sunday.

After securing the front row on Saturday, with Charles Leclerc ahead of Carlos Sainz, the Maranello team couldn’t replicate their success on Sunday, finishing the race in third and fourth positions, behind Max Verstappen’s Red Bull and Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes. This result left many Ferrari fans disappointed, believing that a victory was within reach. But can the weekend at the Hermanos Rodriguez circuit truly be considered a negative one for the Scuderia? Former Ferrari driver Jean Alesi discussed this in his regular analysis for the Italian daily newspaper Il Corriere della Sera.

Jean Alesi: “Pole and front row are a rarity not to be underestimated”

Jean Alesi wanted to make it clear from the start that, unlike many, he doesn’t view Ferrari’s performance in Mexico as negative. He stated: “Many people see Ferrari’s Mexican race as a disappointment. I don’t share that opinion. Let me explain: to witness an all-Maranello front row is, I believe, a source of pride, regardless of any other considerations.” – the Frenchman pointed out.

He added: “It didn’t result in a win, of course, but since nobody wins except for Max Verstappen, it’s a good sign to see Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz leading the way after qualifying. Not only that, Sergio Perez’s reckless move at the first corner damaged Charles’ car, which otherwise might have, at the very least, made Max’s life more challenging.” The former French driver, after recounting the events of the Mexican Sunday and discussing Ferrari’s tire wear issues, concluded his analysis by reiterating the point he made at the beginning: “As a Ferrari fan, the pole position and the front row are a rarity. Enjoyable and not to be underestimated.”
