2009 Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button had words of admiration for Carlos Sainz, as the Scuderia Ferrari driver finished in second place on the podium with his SF21 last race weekend, and also acknowledged the skills of Carlos Sr. in the Extreme E off-road series. Button joined the series for the 2021 season, following in the footsteps of his former track colleagues Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, and will compete with his JBXE team, as owner and driver at the same time.
As reported by Soymotor.com, the second round of Extreme E will take place in Dakar, Senegal, this weekend. Among the participants, names such as Carlos Sainz, Laia Sanz, Cristina Gutiérrez or Sébastien Loeb, as well as Button himself who, however, will not get behind the wheel this time: “The quality of the drivers on the grid is fabulous. They are the best drivers in the world in their own way, men and women. For me the teams are more exciting too, with Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg or Carlos Sainz in their cars. Carlos is one of the best drivers in the history of off-road racing. This makes the fans come to visit us and then decide if they want to stay or not.” – said the Brit.
Lotus will also join the project from this weekend as a new technical partner: “ That’s why it’s so great that Lotus joins our project. It is great for Extreme E that Lotus comes here, because it will increase the interest of other brands, because Lotus not only wants to be here to race, but also to learn from green technologies and apply them to their road cars ”.
As for Formula 1, Jenson couldn’t help but notice the excellent performance of Carlos Sainz, who is now also his direct rival in Extreme E: “Carlos Jr. is doing a great job. It was very special to see him on the podium in Monaco the other day. I hope he has a long career in Formula 1 and doesn’t come to Extreme E, because we already have good drivers; we don’t need another. Carlos is perhaps a bit busy at the moment, with 23 Formula 1 races. He is also doing very well; so I ‘m sure he’s thinking of nothing but Ferrari. I talked to him a few races ago and he told me he liked these off-roaders, but that his dad was even faster than him. Even though he grew up in a rally car environment, he still can’t be as fast as his father with these cars, which shows how good Carlos the father is.” – Jenson Button finished.
