Ferrari’s Mattia Binotto talks about the problems and his relationship with Maurizio Arrivabene. Binotto confirmed that he was close to leaving Ferrari.

Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto was asked to comment on the problems with former Ferrari boss Maurizio Arrivabene, which led to Arrivabene leaving the Maranello team at the end of the 2018 Formula 1 season:

“Working here for 25 years, I was lucky enough to have glorious moments with Todt, Brawn and Schumacher. And then with Stefano Domenicali. I have always learned from everyone, including Maurizio and for that I thank him. Our personal relationship has always been good. Never a quarrel. The difficulty concerned the vision, the management of the group during a race weekend. We had a different point of view.” – Mattia Binotto said, as reported by Italian national sports newspaper based in Rome Corriere dello Sport.

Mattia Binotto also confirmed that he was close to leaving Ferrari at the end of 2018: “I thought that I was no longer in a position to do my job well. I made it known that this was not only a difficulty for me but it affected the whole group because if a techincal director does not work at best everything is reflected on those who he is coordinating. Yes it is true, other teams have looked for me, because my experience has value in Formula 1. But I have never thought of a team other than Ferrari” – he added, according to the Italian media.

Was the appointment as Ferrari Team Principal a surprise or a goal achieved for Mattia Binotto? – “Neither of the two things. That i could become Team Principal was also discussed with Arrivabene. The appointment was the company’s choice and I am grateful to Ferrari for their trust and esteem in me.” – he explained.

From intern to number one at Ferrari, it is remarkable story, especially for young people: “Yes, especially for mu collaborators who consider me one of them and perhaps this is my strength. For some I’m still their intern, for others I’m a young track engineer.” – Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto concluded.
