F1 2024, a fierce battle at the top
Charles Leclerc’s victory at Monza has boosted Ferrari’s morale, which was already high after the Zandvoort weekend, and further balanced both championship standings. “Balance” is indeed the word that best describes the 2024 season: the Red Bull-Max Verstappen duo, which had a flying start reminiscent of 2023, is now facing unexpected challenges and risks losing both titles to Lando Norris and McLaren, while Ferrari quietly positions itself as a strong contender, particularly in the constructors’ championship.
Thanks to the Monza Grand Prix, this season also provides a statistical milestone that highlights the intense competition at the top. Four teams have won at least three races this year, with Red Bull leading with seven victories in 16 GPs, all by Max Verstappen. The remaining nine wins are evenly split between Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes.
This situation has only occurred twice before in F1 history. The first time was 50 years ago, in 1974, when McLaren won four GPs, followed closely by Ferrari, Lotus, and Brabham with three wins each. The second time was in 1977, when Lotus secured five victories, Ferrari four, and Wolf and McLaren three each. The 2024 statistic was reached by the 16th race of the season, coming close to the record set in 1974 (when Brabham’s third win came in the 15th and final race) and surpassing the 1977 tally (McLaren’s third win came in the 17th race).
If McLaren, Mercedes, and Ferrari…
The 2024 Formula 1 season still has the potential to set a record that could be nearly impossible to break in the future: if McLaren, Mercedes, and Ferrari each win at least one more race before the end of the year, it would mark the first time in Formula 1 history that four teams secured four victories in a single season. Given the current balance of the grid, this scenario is far from unlikely.
