Home » Ferrari’s reliability problem is unprecedented since McLaren-Honda era

Ferrari’s reliability problem is unprecedented since McLaren-Honda era. Ferrari is the first team since McLaren-Honda in 2017 to have two DNS in an F1 season.

This is an entirely unfavorable statistic for Ferrari as, with the two DNS (Did Not Start) occurrences in 2023, both due to reliability issues, they inherit a particular statistic from the McLaren-Honda era.

Indeed, the Maranello-based Scuderia is the first team since McLaren-Honda in 2017 to have two DNS (Did Not Start) in a Formula One season. In both cases, it’s one DNS for each of the team’s two drivers.

In the case of the Woking team, the two DNS incidents occurred at the beginning of the Formula 1 championship. The affected races were the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Russian Grand Prix. In Sakhir, Belgian driver Stoffel Vandoorne couldn’t start the race due to a water pressure issue. In Sochi, on the other hand, it was Fernando Alonso who couldn’t take the start of the race, with a gearbox problem preventing him from doing so.

For Ferrari, on the other hand, the two DNS occurred in the latter part of the year. In Qatar, Carlos Sainz had an issue with his SF-23’s fuel tank before lining up on the grid. Charles Leclerc, on the other hand, retired during the formation lap in Brazil, preventing him from even starting the race.

It’s important to note that the purpose here isn’t to compare the two teams and their respective situations but rather to highlight a statistic that is nonetheless indicative of the reliability issues Ferrari has faced this year, which have come at a significant cost.

In addition to the points lost due to the two aforementioned incidents, other episodes need to be considered. Chief among them is Charles Leclerc‘s retirement in Bahrain, which resulted in the loss of a podium finish and 15 points. Additionally, the replacement of the control unit after the Bahrain race led to a grid penalty in Jeddah, impacting the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix as well.
