Former Ferrari general manager Peter Windsor believes that Felipe Massa’s legal action to reclaim the 2008 Formula 1 world championship could reignite the controversy surrounding the final round of the 2021 Formula 1 season, which was held in Abu Dhabi.
Last week, Felipe Massa filed a lawsuit against the FIA, FOM and Bernie Ecclestone over the infamous Crashgate scandal of 2008, in which he lost the championship. Thus, the former Ferrari driver has gone beyond mere words, delving into this sporting matter.
At the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, the Brazilian started from pole position but crossed the finish line only thirteenth after a series of events that compromised his race and eventually the title considering the final standings. The accident deliberately caused by Nelson Piquet Jr. – an action known to Bernie Ecclestone – to favor his then-teammate Fernando Alonso, and the chaotic pit stop under Safety Car conditions, were crucial in determining the world champion at the Interlagos circuit. The title eventually went to Lewis Hamilton, by a single point advantage over Felipe Massa.
Former Ferrari general manager Peter Windsor feels that the action taken by the former Brazilian driver could prompt Lewis Hamilton to do the same, contesting the outcome of the Abu Dhabi 2021 race. That last Grand Prix awarded the drivers’ championship to Max Verstappen, depriving Lewis Hamilton of his eighth title, in rather controversial circumstances.
Through a video posted on his YouTube channel, Peter Windsor stated: “Based on what Felipe did with Singapore in 2008, theoretically there’s a lot more to talk about regarding what happened at Abu Dhabi ’21.”

“In my opinion, the final lap shouldn’t have counted. Lewis should have won that race and become world champion. It’s an interesting point,” he continued.

“You could never ask him in a press conference because he would never give an honest answer. But deep down, if you were to ask Lewis Hamilton to lose his 2008 title to give it to Felipe Massa, and reclaim the 2021 championship, I think he would be willing to do it.” – the former Ferrari general manager concluded.
