James Allison feels Mercedes is slightly ahead of Ferrari in race pace, but a little behind on single-lap. James Allison on the pecking order ahead of the 2024 F1 season.

Mercedes Technical Director James Allison has provided a frank evaluation of the competitive landscape as the 2024 season approaches. Following the conclusion of pre-season testing, both teams and fans are attempting to gauge the relative standings.

This endeavor is by no means unusual – it’s an annual ritual in the world of Formula 1. Yet, the excitement to forecast the advancements teams have achieved during the off-season remains undiminished.

Currently, Red Bull appears to be leading the pack. All signs point to them retaining their dominant position through the winter. The real question now is the extent of their lead – and identifying which teams will pose the greatest challenge.

Ferrari has been the center of attention during the three days of testing in Bahrain, showcasing strong performances in both qualifying and race conditions.

The SF-24’s ability to manage tyres stands out as a significant insight, especially given that this has been a point of struggle for the team in past seasons.

Mercedes, on the other hand, has been somewhat enigmatic, maintaining a low profile during the tests at Sakhir.

Nevertheless, James Allison has offered a refreshingly clear perspective on Mercedes’ position in the competitive hierarchy:

“Red Bull are in front. If you look at their race run, it’s quite fierce. Behind, there are several strong teams in the chasing back – Ferrari seems OK, we [Mercedes] seem OK. Alonso just did a pretty fair run today. That would be my guess of the three chasers.” – he pointed out.

“In precisely what order, I’m not sure. I think we looked slightly better on the long runs but a little behind Ferrari on the single-lap stuff.

“I think a lot will depend on who has a good week between now and then.” – the Mercedes Technical Director continued.

This assessment positions Mercedes a bit higher than the general perception of the Silver Arrows up to this point. In general, the prevailing view is that Ferrari holds the second-fastest spot.

However, the German team has evidently concealed a significant portion of their speed. While this is true for many teams, it appears particularly noteworthy for the squad under Toto Wolff.

After beginning the previous year with challenges, Mercedes is now adopting a more cautious approach.

Yet, history has shown that it’s imprudent to discount them, even when they seem at their weakest.

In the upcoming weekend, with expectations somewhat tempered, they possess a chance to surprise and vie for a podium position.
