Lewis Hamilton: the coat worn as a sign of respect for Enzo Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton drew significant media attention from the moment he posed for his first photo with Ferrari.

Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari 2025

Faced with the response of Ferrari fans who gathered at dawn around the Fiorano circuit despite less-than-ideal weather conditions, the first question that arose was about precedents. Looking back at the history of the Scuderia, memories of the “firsts” of great names arriving at Maranello were rekindled—drivers who donned the red suit after establishing themselves. Nigel Mansell’s debut, Michael Schumacher’s, and Sebastian Vettel’s—all took place at Fiorano, in a unique setting etched forever in their memories.

People often talk about drivers as being cynical, raised in an environment focused solely on numbers and results. Yet, conversations with Sebastian Vettel or, more recently, Carlos Sainz confirm that the first lap at Fiorano is branded in their minds as vividly, if not more so, than their first victory in red.

It’s an experience that resonates deeply, as all describe the same scene: the Prancing Horse on the steering wheel, the small garage doors opening, and the track they’d only seen in videos and photos materializing before them—a certification of becoming a Scuderia Ferrari driver.

Lewis Hamilton wasn’t particularly lucky with the weather, but once he left the garage, he experienced the Grand Prix atmosphere surrounding the track. Such a reception wasn’t guaranteed—certainly not in those numbers and under those conditions. What unfolded at sunrise at the Fiorano circuit exceeded even the expectations of Lewis’s most ardent fans and those of the Scuderia.

Another aspect made the day even more special: its international impact. The presence of Ferrari fans trackside was expected, but less so was the turnout of foreign media mingling with supporters to capture the unique atmosphere of this extraordinary day.

The most successful driver and team in Formula 1 history formalizing their union is a big deal. Yet the momentum, building since last Monday when Lewis took his first steps into the Ferrari Racing Division, has been remarkable.

Global interest, abundant enthusiasm, and one discordant note: a British media representative’s irony about the outfit Lewis wore to Maranello. A shame, because the story behind Hamilton’s attire that Monday was real—it just needed to be uncovered.

Delving into books and watching footage of Ferrari’s history, Lewis was struck by the elegance of Enzo Ferrari, often photographed in a coat, jacket, and tie. Hamilton wanted to pay tribute to the iconic style of the founder, showing respect for the place he was visiting for the first time.

There will inevitably be those who frown upon Hamilton’s approach, comparing it to that of past drivers. But it doesn’t matter—there’s no single way to show respect for a figure, a place, or a legend. The “Commendatore”-style coat carried a clear message: I know where I am, I’ve read this history, and I hope to write new chapters together.
