The Hungarian Grand Prix was expected to represent a good opportunity for Scuderia Ferrari to recover some ground against Red Bull and go into summer break with some positive momentum after the many misfortunes in this first part of the 2022 Formula 1 season. Instead, with his win at the Hungaroring circuit, his eighth of the current campaign, Verstappen made an important step in securing his second world title, as did Red Bull with the constructors’ championship.
Nothing is decided yet, of course, but to date the Milton Keynes team has a considerable advantage over Ferrari, still struggling with the usual strategy problems in Budapest.
In his usual editorial for Formule1.nl, Jacques Villeneuve shared his thoughts on the Hungarian Grand Prix, highlighting the qualities of the Dutch driver and Red Bull’s ability to make the best decisions. Here are some of his considerations.
“… another thing that surprised me yesterday were the decisions made by the teams. Formula 1 is the premier class of motorsport, everything is of a high standard. Not only the drivers, but also the mechanics, engineers and strategists. How can more teams, not just Ferrari, make the decision to go for the hard tire? Even after Alpine proved it was a bad tire … But are they watching the race? Something went terribly wrong in this case. It is incomprehensible that such a thing happens in a sport where there is only room for the best of the best.”
Commenting on the Hungarian Grand Prix, Villeneuve first of all stated:
“The first half of the season has been fantastic, really beautiful to watch and exciting. A lot has happened, but what I find incredible is that Max Verstappen has built up a huge lead.”

Speaking of the fight for the world titles, he added:
“If you look at all the races individually, you would expect a much more exciting title battle. The new rules work well, the drivers can follow each other much longer and be more aggressive in the race. This is a good sign. We have already seen beautiful battles between Ferrari and Red Bull. Ferrari is just as strong, if not stronger. But Red Bull has a considerable advantage from now on. Nothing is decided yet, there are still several races to go. But if this is the trend, if Verstappen continues to lead at this level and Red Bull continues to develop, it will be very difficult to stop them. “

Then, he focused on Verstappen:
“Max is a robot, he’s really not normal. He wasn’t even tired yesterday, I don’t think he even needs to go on vacation! He’s driving so terribly fast this year, and then the team doesn’t make any mistakes. If something goes wrong, he and Red Bull always put themselves in a position to straighten it out. Yesterday he could have simply limited the damage, he didn’t have to win but he did. So they go into the race, they don’t put any pressure on themselves, but then they carry out the plan excellently.” – the former F1 world champion concluded.
