Williams approach Ferrari for deal to allow Carlos Sainz earlier move behind wheel of FW46. James Vowles wants deal with Ferrari to grant Carlos Sainz earlier move.

Carlos Sainz, Ferrari 2024

Franco Colapinto is currently filling in for Logan Sargeant at Williams, but the Argentine driver is aware that his stint may be short-lived, with Carlos Sainz set to take his place after the next eight races. Carlos Sainz is expected to join the team as Alexander Albon’s teammate for the upcoming season. Team principal James Vowles has shared insights on the future of both drivers.

After the Dutch Grand Prix, James Vowles made the decision to replace Sargeant, signaling the start of Colapinto’s temporary role. However, with Carlos Sainz’s move to Williams already confirmed for the 2025 Formula One campaign, Franco Colapinto is aware of the fact his time on the grid may be limited to just a few rounds.

As a part of the Academy, our responsibility is to work with him, with his teams around him as well, to where your future lies. And there are opportunities in other racing series. As I said, depending on how he performs, the future, to a certain extent, is in his hands. And what I mean by that is, if he performs exceptionally well, clearly he’ll remain here as a reserved driver,” James Vowles said of Franco Colapinto.

“So, no one here around this table knows what opportunities exist in any of the teams in 2025 or 2026, in truth. So, you’re investing in someone that I think will have opportunity. And there are still seats available on the grid as well,” the Williams team boss pointed out.

Following the season finale in Abu Dhabi, testing typically occurs at the Yas Marina Circuit. Although Carlos Sainz, who recently secured a multi-year contract with Williams, will still be tied to the Maranello team at that time, team principal James Vowles is hopeful that the Spaniard will be able to drive the FW46 during those sessions.

“We have to still agree terms with Ferrari. He’s under contract with Ferrari until the end of 2024. However, I hope you see him in the car in Abu Dhabi.” – the Williams team principal concluded.
