Home » Carlos Sainz Sr. opens up on his son’s move from Ferrari to Williams in 2025

Carlos Sainz Sr. opens up on his son’s move from Ferrari to Williams in 2025. Carlos Sainz senior commented on his son's decision to join the Williams F1 team.

Carlos Sainz’s move to Williams
He had yet to truly comment on the news of his son’s move from Ferrari to Williams, and especially on his rejection of “his” Audi. Carlos Sainz, who won the last edition of the Dakar Rally with Audi before joining Ford’s project, has now finally spoken out. During the Rally of Morocco, the final round of the 2024 FIA World Rally-Raid Championship, the off-road legend shared his thoughts with the Spanish newspaper *Marca* about Carlos Jr.’s surprise decision to join the Grove team.

Carlos Sainz Sr. speaks
“I’ve always been by his side,” explained the two-time WRC world champion. “And it’s true that this year has been difficult for him, as the season started with the story of Hamilton going to Ferrari. It was a complicated situation. As his father, along with my nephew (Carlos Onoro Sainz, the Ferrari driver’s cousin and manager, ed.), we helped him explore all possible options, but my role in this hasn’t changed. Audi? It was his decision, and we have to respect that. It wasn’t an easy choice because there were three or four options, but in the end, he made the call.”

“We supported him to the fullest,” he continued, “and Williams is a project that’s growing. By the end of the season, they’ve started to improve, and we’re hopeful and confident that next year the team will continue this upward trend. Looking at his career, Carlos has always left a good impression at every team he’s raced for, with his work ethic and skills. The cars have always improved when he arrived, and that’s what’s important and should always be expected from a professional. I believe he’s a serious driver who has a very clear idea of where he wants to go.” – the rally legend explained.

The arrival of Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari forced Carlos Sainz to find a seat for the 2025 Formula 1 campaign, and the choice ultimately fell on Williams. The Spanish driver will therefore become Alex Albon’s teammate, taking the place of Franco Colapinto, who has been impressing quite a bit. The Argentine driver has left everyone speechless since he was called in to replace a disappointing Logan Sargeant. For this reason, James Vowles is doing everything he can to reach an agreement with Audi to ensure that Franco Colapinto has a spot on the grid in 2025.
