Peter Windsor calls Carlos Sainz’s Abu Dhabi test with Williams “one of the saddest bits of news”. Carlos Sainz is set to make his Williams debut during the post-season Abu Dhabi test.

Carlos Sainz, Ferrari 2024

Carlos Sainz is set to make his Williams debut during the post-season Abu Dhabi test, marking a significant step in his transition to the team following Ferrari’s decision to replace him with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton for 2025. Sainz will pilot the current FW46 in the days following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, allowing him an early opportunity to integrate with his new team ahead of partnering Alex Albon next season.

Williams described the test as a chance for Sainz to begin “building their relationship” and getting acclimated before officially joining the Grove-based outfit. However, F1 commentator Peter Windsor has labeled this development as “one of the saddest bits of news,” citing the Spaniard’s unfulfilled potential and missed opportunities elsewhere.

Windsor Doubts Red Bull Future for Sainz
Sainz’s free-agent status earlier this year positioned him as one of the most sought-after drivers in the paddock, especially after he broke Red Bull’s dominance with a stunning win at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. His victory in Australia this season, capitalizing on Max Verstappen’s brake failure, further solidified his reputation.

Despite these achievements, Carlos Sainz’s rumored move to Red Bull fell through after the team extended Sergio Perez’s contract earlier in the year. Sergio Perez’s struggles since then, which have cost Red Bull second place in the Constructors’ Championship, have led to speculation that Christian Horner might be reconsidering the decision. Peter Windsor, however, believes Carlos Sainz’s Williams commitment effectively ends any chance of him joining Red Bull in 2025, even as talks between Horner and Williams Team Principal James Vowles reportedly took place regarding the Spanish driver.

“One of the saddest bits of news is that he’s going to be in the Williams in Abu Dhabi test. That means any chance of going to Red Bull is over and he’s going to be in that Williams. What a ridiculous waste of a talented driver,” Peter Windsor explained.

Did Carlos Sainz Miss a Golden Opportunity with Audi?
Sainz also turned down interest from Audi, who had prioritized him as a partner for Nico Hulkenberg in their ambitious F1 project. Instead, the German manufacturer, which is set to take full control of Sauber in 2026, opted to sign Gabriel Bortoleto after failing to secure Sainz.

While Audi’s current campaign has been underwhelming, recent backing from Qatar’s wealthy investors has reignited optimism about their long-term competitiveness. Carlos Sainz Sr., the two-time World Rally Champion, reportedly urged his son “a thousand times” to consider Audi, citing their strong financial backing and plans to accelerate infrastructure development. By contrast, Williams’ ongoing rebuild remains a slower process.

What Lies Ahead for Carlos Sainz?
As Carlos Sainz gears up for his Williams stint, the decision to join the team instead of waiting for opportunities at Red Bull or Audi is sure to spark debate. While Williams offers a chance to spearhead their revival, it raises questions about whether the Spaniard has sacrificed potential race-winning opportunities for the short-term stability of a midfield seat. For now, the Abu Dhabi test marks the beginning of a new chapter for Carlos Sainz, one laden with both challenges and possibilities.
