A nightmare Sunday

Ferrari’s Sunday in Melbourne was one to forget for both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Between driver errors, strategic mishaps, and—above all—a car that looked anything but fast and competitive, the duo that was supposed to excite Ferrari fans finished the race in eighth and tenth place.

That the day was not going in the right direction should perhaps have been clear from a team radio exchange that was as comedic as it was surreal, featuring none other than Charles Leclerc and his race engineer, Bryan Bozzi.

A comedy-like back-and-forth

At one point, Charles Leclerc came on the radio to ask if there was some kind of leak in the cockpit. “A leak of what?” Bryan Bozzi asked. Charles Leclerc then explained the situation: “My seat is full of water, completely full of water!” To which Bryan Bozzi responded disarmingly: “It must be water.” Charles Leclerc, clearly unimpressed by his engineer’s reply, fired back: “Let’s add that to the pearls of wisdom.”

Obviously, this was a minor incident, one that even brought a few laughs and certainly wasn’t the cause of Ferrari’s poor result. However, it does highlight that communication between drivers and the pit wall is still far from perfect at times. It’s yet another issue that Ferrari will need to address in the coming races to prevent the season from taking an early bad turn.

There’s certainly his influence behind the Monegasque’s success. Since Bryan Bozzi became his race engineer, Charles Leclerc has secured three victories and several podiums, allowing him to occupy third place in the drivers’ standings. Number 16 is now seventy-nine points behind Max Verstappen, but he has confessed that he doesn’t want to stop believing in the possibility of winning the title.

“As long as the math allows me to, I will keep believing,” declared the Monegasque after his victory in Texas. The performance that led Charles Leclerc to win the Austin GP was full of maturity, a “mega job” as Frederic Vasseur described it in the post-race team radio.

The team radio after the victory
Right after crossing the finish line, Charles Leclerc opened up on the radio with Bryan Bozzi to kick off Ferrari’s celebration.

BB: “That’s my boy, another victory.”

CL: “Yes, yes, yes, let’s go!”

FV: “Mega job, mega, mega, mega.”

CL: “Great job, great.”

BB: “You’re starting to like these starts from fourth position.”

CL: “I think we should start aiming for that. It’s working pretty well.”

In fact, this wasn’t the first time the Monegasque has won after starting from fourth place. It had already happened in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where, after the battle between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, he managed to take the lead, which then allowed him to secure the victory.

Charles Leclerc’s race in Canada went from bad to worse: after a bitter qualifying session, there was also an engine problem that cost the number 16 car about 1.2 seconds per lap. However, the difficulties were not solely related to the power unit, as his Maranello teammate also struggled to find the right setup on the Canadian track.

During a critical moment of the Grand Prix, specifically during the first Safety Car while the track was drying with threatening clouds in the sky, the strategists took a gamble with Charles Leclerc by calling him in a second time to restart the control unit and fit hard tires. The Monegasque was the only one on track with dry tires, but the choice did not pay off as he couldn’t stay on the racing line. After going off track and damaging the front wing, he eventually retired. A very curious exchange occurred between Bryan Bozzi and the driver when the latter was out with dry tires and requested another stop: “If you put on intermediates, we’ll have to stop in two laps for the hards. We’re in sh** anyway. You decide.” “I want intermediates,” Charles Leclerc responded.

In addition to various recent external recruits by Ferrari, such as Lewis Hamilton and the likes of Loic Serra and Jerome D’Ambrosio, who are also about to join Maranello, team principal Frederic Vasseur has also managed to enhance the internal resources of the company, choosing a profile unknown to most instead of Xavi Marcos, but who has played a fundamental role in the track team for years.

We are obviously talking about Bryan Bozzi, an Italo-Danish engineer who for the past five years has held the position of performance engineer for Charles Leclerc and who, starting from Ferrari’s home weekend in Imola, received an important promotion as Leclerc’s race engineer, immediately showcasing excellent communication skills.

“I am Italo-Danish by birth and graduated from St George’s British International School of Rome before moving to England to study Mechanical Engineering at Bath University,” commented Bryan Bozzi, talking about the academic and professional journey that then led him to wear red.

“During that time, I participated in a Formula Student project, in which several groups of students have the opportunity to design and build a race car, and then various universities from all over the world compete against each other as if they were motorsport teams.” – the Italian explained.

It is precisely thanks to the apprenticeship in England that Bryan Bozzi trained as an engineer, eventually fulfilling the dream of joining Ferrari: “Thanks to this experience, I realized that I really liked racing, and I sought to get an internship at Ferrari, the team where everyone wants to work sooner or later.”

Finally, speaking about what it means to work for a team like Ferrari, Bryan Bozzi replied: “Things went well, and I have been part of the Scuderia Ferrari track team for many years now. Representing this company and Italy as a whole in the top category of motorsport is a great source of pride for me, especially having the opportunity to work alongside an exceptional driver like Charles.” – the new Ferrari race engineer concluded.

Scuderia Ferrari team boss Frederic Vasseur expressed satisfaction with Bryan Bozzi’s performance as Charles Leclerc’s race engineer after the first two races.

The days of shouting and misunderstandings over the team radio, sometimes leading to embarrassing moments between Charles Leclerc and Xavi Marcos, seem far behind. After six years of collaboration, Ferrari decided to relieve the Spanish engineer from his position as race engineer for the Monegasque driver, redirecting him towards “the development of other important company programs.”

Bryan Bozzi passes the first tests with flying colors
In his place, the Maranello team decided to promote Bryan Bozzi from the role of performance engineer. The Italian appeared on the pit wall for the first time during the Imola weekend, and the rapport with Charles Leclerc was immediately evident.

The first victory then came right in Monaco, at Charles Leclerc’s home race, with Bryan Bozzi providing precise and on-point instructions to the driver, also showing hints of the chemistry that has made pairs like Lewis Hamilton – Pete Bonnington or Verstappen-Lambiase iconic.

Frederic Vasseur also noticed this, and speaking to the Italian media in a long interview (which you can read in full here) he offered an initial assessment of the technician’s work: “Two weekends, very strong, without errors. He was also very direct and decisive.” – the French

“Monaco was not an easy race to tackle because, as you saw, it was a matter of management. A couple of times we had the driver asking to push more, and we tried to slow them down a bit for strategic reasons.”

“The communication between Bryan and Charles was very clear. The understanding was very quick, without errors. The collaboration with Charles, technically speaking, is good, but they have known each other for years. I would say that so far, the two of them are perfect.” – Fred Vasseur concluded.

Bryan Bozzi has replaced Xavier Marcos as Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari race engineer since the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at the Imola circuit.

In the last two Formula 1 calendar events, the first in his new role, something seems to have changed at Ferrari, and for the better.

Ferrari, Bryan Bozzi’s choice seems to be the right one
The choice to pair the Monegasque driver with the engineer graduated from the University of Bath seems to have already borne the desired fruits.

The Imola race was the first demonstration of the excellent understanding between Charles Leclerc and Bryan Bozzi, while the Monaco weekend confirmed it.

With the excellent work done in providing the driver with a car he feels more comfortable with (from a setup perspective), the effectiveness of the radio communications – sometimes with a touch of irony – and the impeccable race management, the Italian has been up to the mission called “race victory.”

At the end of the Monaco Grand Prix, he also shed sincere tears of emotion and shared a strong hug with Charles Leclerc, a testament to the excellent personal relationship between the two. The professional relationship, if it continues in this way, is destined only to improve; much to the satisfaction of the fans and team principal Frederic Vasseur.

Yes, because the call to redirect Xavi Marcos was his, like many others made in the last 15 months. The Ferrari team principal is rebuilding the Maranello team step by step, and he is doing it greatly.

After clinching victory at the Monaco Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc’s playful radio exchange with new race engineer Bryan Bozzi sheds light on Ferrari’s strategic approach to the race. Despite starting from pole position and maintaining control of the pace throughout the circuit’s winding streets, Charles Leclerc’s instructions to drive as slow as possible were not a sign of complacency but a calculated move to manage the race.

As the race unfolded, Charles Leclerc’s deliberate pace not only dictated the rhythm of the race but also played a strategic role in determining whether Ferrari’s rivals could opt for an in-race pit stop. With the decision of whether to pit or not dominating discussions, Leclerc and Ferrari assessed if any of the top contenders, including Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris, and George Russell, could make the pit stop without losing their position.

Ferrari’s goal was clear: to prevent their rivals, especially the two McLaren cars of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris from gaining an advantage through a well-timed pit stop, particularly given Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton’s pace post-stop.

Despite repeated instructions to slow down from the team to maintain the gap, Charles Leclerc engaged in a light-hearted conversation with his new race engineer, Bryan Bozzi, as they discussed the numbers. It was evident that amidst the banter, Charles Leclerc remained focused on securing his first-ever Monaco Grand Prix victory.
