The British motorsport engineer mentioned the emotional ups and downs that came with the contract talks, which began at the Hermann Tilke-designed Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island last year. Williams emerged as the most appealing option compared to the other offers—one involving Audi’s untested engine project for the 2026 Formula 1 campaign and the other dealing with internal issues at Alpine.

However, motorsport analyst Peter Windsor, who was also Ferrari’s general manager for its UK base in 1989, argues that Carlos Sainz may have made a significant error in his contract with Williams, as he explained in a recent YouTube livestream on his official account.

Carlos Sainz’s contract, reportedly valued at £8.5 million per year, allegedly includes a clause allowing him to leave Williams if he receives an offer from top teams such as Mercedes or Red Bull. While James Vowles has denied the existence of such a clause, noting that few people at Williams know the exact terms, Peter Windsor believes that if the clause is present, Carlos Sainz may have miscalculated by including it in his multi-year agreement with the Grove-based team starting in 2025.

“Carlos has signed this weird contract where the minute there is availability at Red Bull or Mercedes, he can walk away from the Williams contract. That also brings with it a slightly weird relationship between the driver and team in terms of confidentiality and information, working closely together,” – the Formula One journalist, and former Formula One team and sponsorship manager explained – “Personally, I think Carlos has made a mistake. If he has not included Ferrari in that, I think he’s made a big mistake because if it doesn’t go brilliantly for Lewis or Charles has an issue with Lewis, Ferrari will have a seat as early as 2027.” – he added.

The contract signed by the current Ferrari driver with Williams for the next season has introduced a new dynamic at Mercedes, particularly concerning 17-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The rumored clause in Carlos Sainz’s deal, which could allow him to move to Mercedes if certain performance criteria aren’t met, could see the Spaniard fast-tracked to the Silver Arrows, potentially disrupting Kimi Antonelli’s path.

Initially, Mercedes appeared to be the perfect fit for Kimi Antonelli, especially given their early-season struggles, which were expected to continue into the following championship. This would have allowed the young driver some breathing room to develop before being expected to compete at the front. However, Mercedes’ recent resurgence following a breakthrough with the W15 has changed the landscape. Now, Kimi Antonelli might face the pressure to deliver podiums and race wins early in his Formula 1 career.

While Kimi Antonelli’s progress in Formula 2 has been hampered by Prema’s issues, he’s also made several rookie mistakes on track. In contrast, Carlos Sainz, with his wealth of experience and Williams’ status as a Mercedes engine customer, could be seen as a more reliable option for the team.
