2024 F1 Azerbaijan GP changes months: why is Baku City Circuit hosting the race in September?. For the first time, the Azerbaijan GP is changing its place on the F1 calendar.

Since last year, Formula 1 has implemented a new format, introducing the Sprint Race weekend.

Typically, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix is held in the spring months, but from 2024, the Formula 1 calendar has been slightly adjusted. With twenty-four races to be spread over twelve months, this season of Formula 1 is like none before.

This year, the premier category will race in Baku in the fall, with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend starting on September 13 and ending on September 15. Why was this change in schedule made?

Formula 1 has structured the calendar with the intention of concentrating as many races as possible in Europe, making the 2024 season more sustainable for the teams.

By moving Japan to April, Azerbaijan to September, and pairing Qatar with Abu Dhabi, this year’s schedule allows for a better flow of races in specific regions of the world. This way, teams (mechanics, engineers, and drivers) can manage the races more effectively from a logistical standpoint.

The Baku Grand Prix is the last in a series of races in Europe; from Singapore, the teams will move abroad, returning later for the final two rounds in the Middle East.

This year, the 2024 F1 calendar has also been designed to accommodate Ramadan, the sacred holiday for Muslims. In fact, the first two races of the season in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were held on Saturday, with all activities moved up by a day.
