Home » The bold 2021 F1 pre-season prediction of Carlos Sainz that ended up coming true

The bold 2021 F1 pre-season prediction of Carlos Sainz that ended up coming true. Carlos' 2021 pre-season prediction that ended up coming true.

Not a lot of fans would have anticipated some of the incredible moments which took place in the 2021 Formula 1 championship, such was the drama and unpredictability that we got to see during the 22 races this year. However, came with the action. But Carlos Sainz was able to nail a rather precise prediction which he made before the first round of the season.

Each Formula 1 driver on the current grid was asked to make certain predictions ahead of the start of the championship, with the idea of revisiting later on when the season would have been completed at the end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the Yas Marina circuit. They were asked what they believed the most surprising moment of 2021 would be and which would be their favourite race.

That was before the first race of the championship back in March and now they were all reminded of the early calls they had made. Regarding the biggest surprise of the season goes, it’s not much of a shock to find out that no-one predicted the title race would be decided by a late safety car and an overtake on the very last lap of the final race.

However, Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz made a very pretty bold prediction of his own which eventually turned out to be correct. The Spaniard decided to take a stab at how many racers would win a Grand Prix during the 2021 championship and was delighted to realise that he had nailed it.

“Six different drivers will win a Grand Prix,” was the Spaniard’s prediction. “Did this happen?” he asked when reading it back.

“Esteban [Ocon] and Daniel [Ricciardo] for sure, Max [Verstappen] and Lewis [Hamilton], Checo [Perez] for sure… I have five. Valtteri [Bottas] won one? I guess he did, one race. Six, eh? That’s a pretty bold prediction. I feel like I was reading the future.” – he said, in a video published by the Formula 1 official Youtube account.

Carlos Sainz was not able to score a race win in his first year for Scuderia Ferrari, but can be more than happy with a season, as the Italian side enjoyed a much better campaign than the previous one and eventually finished right behind Mercedes and Red Bull in the final constructors’ championship thanks to a great final part of the season. Carlos Sainz himself finished with a podium at the Yas Marina track, a P3 finish that allowed him to overtake team-mate Charles Leclerc and former racing partner Lando Norris in the drivers’ standings.

He was the top-ranked driver who did not race for Mercedes or Red Bull, and can be proud of his accomplishments after making the brave switch to join Ferrari from McLaren. As it turns out, Carlos Sainz had anticipated before the start of the season that the race in Monaco would be his favourite of the year and he was proven right once again: “My favourite race will be going back to Monaco,” was what he had written on his card – “In 2020 we could not go, and it was by favourite race going back. It was actually a pretty good race for me,” he explained. “So, pretty good predictions!”
