The Italian Grand Prix in Monza was an opportunity to also continue the negotiations regarding the new cycle of engines that will characterize Formula 1 starting from 2025 or at the latest from 2026. According to the leaked rumors, the big news will be the abandonment of the MGU-H component, one of the most sophisticated components of these power units which is very efficient but at the same time very expensive and complex from an engineering point of view. The MGU-H is the component used for the conversion of thermal energy from the exhaust gases of the turbocharger, and is the most off-limits in terms of know-how and skills for new potential manufacturers interested in entering or returning to Formula 1 in occasion of this new regulatory cycle with regard to engines.
Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal, explained that his team is ready to accept giving up this component to encourage the entry of new manufacturers such as the Volkswagen group. Mattia Binotto, Ferrari team principal, confirmed this hypothesis: “So far all the discussions we have had have been positive, and most or all of the manufacturers somehow agree to remove the MGU-H – the words of the Ferrari team principal, as reported by racer.com magazine – we, like the others, agree on this. There are many details that are still to be discussed and this is normal. But I think that in general the discussion is progressing positively at the moment” – the Ferrari boss added.
The current power units made their debut in Formula 1 seven years ago when only Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault were present at the level of engineers. The only manufacturer to join was Honda starting from 2015. The costs incurred by the Japanese giant, especially taking into account the great difficulties experienced before starting to score some prestigious results, have removed any hopes for other potential manufacturers of entering Formula 1. In view of 2025 or 2026, the goal is to make the sport less inaccessible in terms of the complexity of the power units.
