Calendar rotation: which circuits could join Formula 1?. Formula 1 appears ready to welcome applications from new (and returning) circuits.

The recent announcement of Spa-Francorchamps’ renewal caused quite a stir: the Belgian circuit will not feature in the calendar for 2028 and 2030 but will return in 2031. This detail suggests that this contractual model could become the standard for European races.

What had been speculated in recent seasons is now becoming reality. A new contractual dimension opens up for Formula 1 circuits: calendar rotation. Organizers will be able to sign non-continuous contracts, securing their presence in the Circus only during predetermined seasons. This approach aims to expand the number of countries and facilities involved while keeping the total number of Grands Prix stable.

The news has sparked mixed reactions but could create intriguing scenarios. *The Race* compiled a list of circuits that are close to joining (or rejoining) Formula 1. In Europe, France and Germany stand out, with renewed hope also for Imola and other tracks that, despite various challenges, aspire to a spot in the top tier.

Beyond Europe: Interest from South America, Asia, and Africa
The calendar rotation responds to a growing interest from organizers worldwide. In Asia, at least two countries are strongly interested: Thailand, proposing a race on the streets of Bangkok, and South Korea, also willing to set up a street circuit in Incheon. In the background, Malaysia continues to resurface as a contender, alongside India.

Africa, meanwhile, has been discussed more openly. With the support of Lewis Hamilton and Stefano Domenicali, a race on this rediscovered continent could soon become a reality. Rwanda leads the race, with plans for a new circuit in collaboration with Alex Wurz. There is also interest from Kyalami in South Africa and the picturesque Zanzibar, where a project is being supervised by Giancarlo Fisichella.

Lastly, South America remains a point of focus. Mexico faces uncertainty, with its contract expiring in 2025 and the confirmed departure of Sergio Perez. Meanwhile, Argentina has recently expressed interest in Formula 1, driven by rising talent Franco Colapinto. However, Buenos Aires’ potential entry would not happen in the short term.
