Home » Why Mohammed Ben Sulayem is at odds with the British media

Why Mohammed Ben Sulayem is at odds with the British media. The relationship between FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and the British press .

The Duel
Mohammed Ben Sulayem became FIA President on December 17, 2021, defeating the English candidate Graham Stoker. In this context, the British federation naturally supported their compatriot, defending the traditional influence of British motorsport within the FIA.

Over the past three years, the British media has often been the first to report rumors about numerous departures from FIA ranks and compliance investigations launched—and later concluded with no findings—against Mohammed Ben Sulayem. Recently, British outlets have strongly opposed amendments to the FIA Statutes that would grant excessive power to the President.

Why Is Mohammed Ben Sulayem Angry?
The FIA President has repeatedly criticized the British media, complaining about a series of comments he considers offensive or inaccurate regarding his leadership and character. Ben Sulayem has expressed concern about how the British press portrays his statements and decisions, accusing them of bias and failing to present a complete picture of his activities.

A key argument for the Emirati President is that the criticisms are based on distorted opinions rather than facts. He has also emphasized that the media holds no power over him or the FIA, as the federation is a democratic and independent organization.

It is also worth noting that the British media has delved into Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s past, highlighting controversial remarks that could be interpreted as insensitive or misaligned with modern sensibilities, particularly regarding women in motorsport.

Unsurprisingly, Mohammed Ben Sulayem has recently made sharp remarks targeting the sacred temple of British motorsport, Silverstone: “Is it the British GP? No, it’s the Qatar Airways British GP. Who provides the budget to keep races running? Saudi Arabia has invested a lot of money.”
