Discussions about Africa’s possible return to the F1 calendar have been ongoing for several months. With growing interest in the premier motorsport class, many countries have expressed their desire to host a Grand Prix.

However, beyond the words, concrete action is required, and only a few nations have made significant progress. A few days ago, we discussed Turkey’s interest in rejoining the Formula 1 calendar.

Now, interesting developments have emerged regarding South Africa’s bid. On Friday, the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture (DSAC) published a document inviting potential venues to submit their plans for analysis and selection.

The publication The Race reviewed a copy of this document, revealing that a potential South African Grand Prix could take place from 2026 or 2027 for a duration of 10 years.

“A promoter and/or a suitable venue (circuit facility) and host city will be chosen to submit a bid to the FIA and Formula 1 for evaluation with the necessary approvals and support from the DSAC,” the document states.

In recent months, the former South African GP venue, Kyalami, has emerged as the clear favorite, though Cape Town has also put forward a proposal.

To host a Grand Prix, certain criteria must be met. Among them, the race must be held in an “iconic destination location.” Additionally, the circuit must be located less than 30 minutes from a major city.

“The surrounding environment must contribute to the look and feel of a premier international event and/or provide an iconic backdrop,” the document specifies. Another requirement concerns the track itself. “It must be suitable for an exciting racing spectacle, allowing wheel-to-wheel competition and offering multiple overtaking opportunities.”

The last South African Grand Prix was held in 1993.
