Mattia Binotto’s resignation as team principal of Scuderia Ferrari gave further vent to all those people who criticized the Maranello pit wall already during the 2022 Formula One season, especially starting from the Monaco Grand Prix on the streets of Monte Carlo, when the Italian side compromised Charles Leclerc chances of winning in front of his own fans after calling him to the box for a short and uselss stint on the intermediate tyres.
According to some, the resignation handed in by the former team principal was an almost necessary act, for others Mattia Binotto would have deserved another opportunity.
If solidarity is taken for granted among the team principal colleagues, the situation changes among the fans and external observers. For example German racing driver Hans-Joachim Stuck, who has competed in Formula One and many other categories, believes that in 2022 Scuderia Ferrari had what it takes to fight for the Formula One world title up to the very end.
Only the uncertainties in terms of race operations and the Maranello pit wall level prevented the F1-75 from winning more races and challenging Red Bull for the world titles: “Ferrari has made some unacceptable mistakes, which should happen at this level. How is it possible that the fourth wheel is missing in the pits?” – these were some of the comments made by the 71-year-old former Formula 1 driver in a recent interview for the Germans of Sport1, as he referred to the mess in the pits with Carlos Sainz in Zandvoort, when a disastrous pit stop dropped him down the pack and out of contention for a podium finish, due to the rear-left tyre not being ready as he arrived at his box: “Even with the strategy mistakes Ferrari definitely threw away a lot of potential.” – Hans-Joachim Stuck concluded.
